Off on holidays for 4 weeks putting the puma to bed..I have no confidence in car batteries.I have a maintenance trickle charger which I will be connecting up. And is it really necessary to go through all the weird carry on it says in the manual to disconnect the battery..I have a second vehicle that I just put + pos to the battery and black to engine block no problems..leaving the battery connected . Can it be done to a puma?

before you goto that effort, double check the trailer plug, if you have a live 12v aux feed on that, wire up your charger to suit the socket and have at it.

For the shed class landrovers (and because Im lazy) I generally try to find charging points that work under the bonnet without having to access the batteries.

I almost always wind up on the alternator with a jumper lead or the startermotor feed.

theres also usually a couple of fuse holders that are empty that are live that you can put a spade connector into

Providing your charger is self monitoring and will just maintain full charge and not kep on charging. C-Tek or similar no issues just hook it up.

as I dont use my Defender as much (Puma) I have connected one of these: Ctek Battery Charger Comfort Indicator Eyelet With LED Charge Lights 56 382 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CTEK-BATTERY-CHARGER-COMFORT-INDICATOR-EYELET-WITH-LED-CHARGE-LIGHTS-56-382-/400358653651?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d373c3ed3)
with it coming permanently out from under the seat - so its easy to connect up the Ctek charger and leave on without accessing the batteries directly. I also have a 175amp Anderson plug/lead for attaching jumper cables if I need to, also without directly accessing the batteries.

As Marty110 said , C-Tek do great charging ports pretty much ideal for defenders and the problem with the batteries under the seats

These are $29 each from battery World and I have put two on each of my defenders for easy charge of the both the batteries

Just be careful leaving chargers connected to batteries while not in use.

The why is pretty simple.

Do you have fuses in the charging leads that connect directly to the battery?

Yes you do with the Ctek plugs. These plugs I fitted to the defenders have an inline fuse holder and fuse.

that wasnt quite what i was meaning, because your charger isn't permanently connected and most of the installations (that Ive seen or done) that use a charging plug hook up to a hot fused supply.

This easy Ctek charger connection may be a good solution for some of you. You can order the Ctek/12S plug adaptor from the D3 forum as per the link given in the attached defender2.net thread. It works a treat I can assure you.:)
