Hi All,

The Oil Pump in my D4 has failed. This is the first time I've heard of one leaking. (77K on the ODO). It's leaked oil everywhere and damaged several things including the timing belt.

Anybody else experienced this?

Cheers,

Kev.

Sorry, no I haven't Kev - is that the 3.0ltr engine?

There's a number of stories about them breaking in the 2.7 D3 (the part was redesigned 4 or 5 times as a result) but not heard anything in a D4.

Yes, sorry. Mine's a 3.0L.

Lucky me....

Oil pump failed or the front crankshaft seal failed? The crankshaft seal is located in the front of the oil pump housing. Crankshaft seals in general can be wrecked by dirt/grit/sand ingress.

Dunno Graeme, haven't got all the details. LR are stating Oil Pump but I haven't been in there yet and haven't seen the report.

Dirt, grit, sand.....mmmm.....not my car....;).

Thanks mate. This will certainly help me shape the conversation tomorrow afternoon.

A leaking seal is one thing but one that is no longer in-situ is another.

So will the seals come out on all these engines/pump housings eventually?

I don't know, but this part
"NOTE: All oil pumpsproduced since the 2nd May 2012 will have the updated bore finish."
Doesn't give a warm fuzzy feeling.

It sounds as though the earlier ones were too smooth.

What's causing the seals to walk - insufficient fit interference?

Maybe Kev will be able to
get more info this afternoon.

Hi All,

Got the car back yesterday afternoon.

I posed the question about the service bulletin supplied by dazray but the guy on the front desk pleaded ignorance.

Anyway, parts replaced were:

Pump-Oil-TDV6
Kit-Cam Belt
Bolt-Pulley-M16
Seal-Crank-FRT

Apparently there were some bushing replaced too, due to oil contamination but they weren't listed on the report.

Fingers crossed that the new oil pump will have no further issues.

Cheers,

Kev.
