View Full Version : Perentie with a back seat

Hi All
Just purchased a Perentie and was wanting to put a forward facing seat in the back to take two children. i got a quote for a 2 seater bench seat plus anchor points plus compliance plate for $2k. (The seat by itself was $1500).

To save on costs I was wondering if a bench seat from a defender (purchased from a wreacker) could easily bolt onto the chassis. If so, would the body work in the back need to be modified. Obviously the current back seats would need to be taken out before the bench seat is inserted.

Has anyone done this?
Cheers Tim

the to chassis defender stuff wont fit. the chassis is different.

the stuff that bolts in with brace plate will fit but be careful how far back you go so you dont hit the CES boxes.

Interested in any info on adding waist belts to the bench seats in the perentie and then getting that complianced (mostly to act as a shuttle when out camping in groups)

I was thinking the fold down dicky seats from the rear of the Disco II or the rear folding seats from a Defender Puma could be made to fit. That way when the tin lids aren't in the back, the seats could be folded up releasing floor space.

However the after-market rear seating usually have integral seat belts which is part of the cost.

Your other option would be to do a walk around one of the Pick-N-Payless type automotive dismantlers and see if there are rear seats with integral belts from Jap 4WD or people carriers that could be adapted to the rear of the Perentie. Mitsubishi Delica have interesting seating.

Don't think you can get sideways sitting compliant (not to mention way too risky for serious injury) so as said by Lotz a Landies you would have to retro fit modern forward facing seats.

Hi there

NOT TRUE - they still sell Toyota troop-carriers with side ways facing seats

I went to the Land Rover wreckers at Lonsdale SA - they sold me 2 x bench seats with all the brackets & seatbelts, been inspected and they didn't question it.

Hey guys,
I realise this is an old post, but wondering if anyone has had any luck fitting foldable, forward facing rear seats in a Perentie? If so, which seats fit and how did you go with engineering and compliancing?
Thanks

1. Diana (Lotz a Landies) is dead right that sideways facing seats are not good in an accident. They should be used for occasional short trips (or not at all as Diana says)

2. The Tassie motor authorities have determined that the rear inward facing perentie seats can be used with engineered safety belt anchors IF the ROPS is padded with 1" foam (i've put the document on here before)

3. I am messing about with a conversion of a 1986 county body to mine and have replicated the right side rear toolbox. The early county has a left side one already and has safety belt anchor factory fitted to suit. I have made a "mirror image" one for the right with a tick from my engineer. I plan to use the inward facing seats for occasional use. I have a defender 60/40 split middle row bench seat. I will register a mod for 8 persons (nine would need a different level of ADR compliance according to our authorities despite the county 110 9-10 occupancy).

Anything is possible; though I think you'd struggle getting forward facing seats approved.
I'm sure there are some rules about access to the seats that the design of the Perentie
would make very difficult to get approval for.

What state are you in?

Forward facing seats are allowed in QLD, side facing are banned.

Pm me for details.

....... with a tick from my engineer.......

That is the most important thing. Talk to your engineer that is approved by the registration authority in your state.

I like that option but the tub (boxes) in the back of a perentie or any pre 2007 defender/110 are a different design and the seats would not fit without modification to the seat frames or boxes. I would imagine that this would drasticlly increase the engineering requirements.

NSW allows inward facing. I had 4 seat belts installed a few months back, engineer certified, rego updated now to 6 seater.

The Beast - Do you have any more info? It's something I am very interested in...

hi JCR,

it was done by Mobility Engineering at Hornsby. cost 330 per seatbelt installed plus about 300 or so for the engineering certificate. that also included padding on all the bars anywhere near a passenger's head. they do the work then send you the cert (and also straight to RMS i think). then you just get a new rego cert printed and its done. easy company to deal with.

that money might seem a lot given the original cost of the vehicle but it has really opened up how much more i can use my truck; dad and now two kids going fishing or mtn biking, taking whole family in landy now instead of swmbo's boring pajero, mum taking child and four friends to soccer training in "dad's cool army truck" etc etc

after talking with Morry at Mobility we settled on 4 seatbelts and thats really all i need. six would have had the centre passengers with their head right next to the vertical metal frame, 8 is also doable but i think that means 2 vehicle inspections per year because at 10 seats in total its now effectively a people carrier or bus and it would also be very cramped in there.

be aware that sideways seats are less than ideal for safety and there is plenty of commentary on this forum about this matter. so far the majority of our trips with people in the back have been local trips mostly on minor roads (yes, yes i know that doesnt guarantee you wont have a crash); i'd be reluctant to go on freeway or other higher speed roads or long distances with people in the back. i'm sure others will add their opinions to this.

anything else you need let me know

This might be useful to someone who isn't fussed about sideways seating... (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-x-Pair-Land-Rover-Rear-Seat-Mounts-DIY-Dickie-Seat-side-Facing-seat-Brackets-/172030619388?hash=item280dd2eefc)

Welcome to the forum.

Addition of a centre front seat in a Perentie is a different kettle of fish and a little easier. It's just the same as centre front seat from a civilian 110. This may explain why posts on this subject are few and far between.

There are quite a number of people who have done this, though.

I would suggest you start a new thread asking for advice on this subject.
