I've just downloaded Apple's new OS on my iPhone5.

Download takes around an hour on 3G. (It's going to take a while with 2 iPhones and 1 iPad) Yeah I know about 3 hours.

First impressions are;

Visually appealing, much more interesting graphics.

Looking forward to exploring more

I hope it's good. Work has told us specifically not to update anything to it yet until they can check all of the compatability.

i dont like it.. not as intuitive, the icons are all "fisherprice". It looks like Android 4.0! Simple things like loosing the ability to select an artist name by their specific letter rather than a group and then scrolling more are ridiculous.

These are all major steps backwards that Jobs would never have allowed.

Has some good points and bad, but do agree that it looks fisher price like

I use my phone for work and the calendar is important to me and now does not make it so easy to view meeting and things coming up.

But a bit difficult for them to change as it has been the same for so long. Just have to get used to this now.

Btw who is getting the new one. I have the 5 and thinking about getting the 5s but don't know. I bought my wife a 5 three weeks ago and they said that I can take that back within 40 days and upgrade to the new one. So thinking about doing that.

Not a fan so far, my iPad 3 seems slower, and seems to stutter more now. The visuals seem much more flat and slightly unappealing, the theme looks like the old MSN logo. Only took 15 minutes to install.

I just discovered i can't jump forward or back when playing music. Pause and Play also don't work.

Anyone else?

I haven't had too much time to get into the system yet, but really dont like the cheap tacky icons. I also don't like the grey on white font when accessing emails.Makes it harder to read in low light.

Sheerluck... Reboot the iPad...

Anyone having a problem, full restart should sort it.

You can select the artist just as before...

Not sure what's going on for you..

Tried that a few times Tombie, there's still an element of delay when typing or doing anything.

Change the wallpaper in the back ground to the black style one. Then it makes it all look a lot better.

I like the drop down box and the up box with all the short cuts. Like the better way to change from one open app to another
Makes life a lot easier with something's but don't like the calendar.

I have had no software problems with my iphone or iPad. All works fine for me.

Yep pretty unimpressed. The apps look very cheap & tacky, one of the reasons I moved from Win CE based phones way back was the GUI. I have a POS Hauwei as a work phone and now my iPhone & iPad look like that! :censored:

I also find that as someone who is halfway between needing glasses some of the time the "new, sleek look" is an absolute pig. The low contrast and silhouette in-app controls are bloody hard to see.

I do like the quick access on swipe up. My 9 year old daughter likes it, but then she likes Home & Away and believes what she sees on tabloid news programmes ;).

Anyone feel like coding a skin that looks like iOS 6.xxx?
Cheers
Mike

Some learning for you...

Take a look around the settings...

Accessibility for instance:

Invert colours is one
Increase contrast another
Bold text
Reduce motion

All functions that make the interface friendlier for those with eye problems etc

Yeah some of them help also change the back wallpaper to black still. This tones down the brightness of the apps and contrast too. Makes it look a bit normal.

As said change tex to bold helps heaps on email.

Hi Tombie
Did the first two yesterday...the parallax isn't a problem (how it allegedly gives people vertigo I don't know), I saw bold text but didn't get around to the reboot.

That certainly looks more readable, I'll give it a whirl...please tell me they're not going to do this to Mountain Lion

I don't like the colours they have used. I wish I could change the colour scheme on the calendar.

My 1yr old daughter can't tell the difference between IOS7 and her toy phone now... This could be fun!

The face time app has a nice black screen with white and blue text which I think looks really good (very Tron). However it just reminds me of my mates new Nokia... the white/grey everywhere on all the other stuff makes me think they are getting users ready for the look/feel of the upcoming iwatch. Some mock ups I have seen have curved transparent screens with very similar GUI's... it all probably looks sexier on transparent screens?!?

Ok, so for a technical dunce like me, what are the advantages of the update? I haven't installed it yet, and I'm still undecided if I should or not. My ipad works fine as it is - do I need to upgrade anything?

And, if it takes that long to download, how big is it? Will it take up more space as mine is only a 16 gig unit, so I don't want to waste space with crap I don't need.

Cheers - Gav

The best way to see what's new is do a YouTube search for ios7 hints and tips ..there is quite a lot there, the only thing I don't like, it the new graphic look like they where done by the same people that did " South Park " which I can't stand ...Gary

Had a few other thoughts about why the GUI changes...

1. Now they can sell more apps for theme and background changes.

2. If we all whine about an obvious easily fixed issue we will be less inclined to focus on the other unwanted (for existing long term product users) changes.

It's all brand management stuff... Very devious big business protocol. Just like most marketing and advertising spin out there these days.

The fact that 7.0.1 and 7.0.2 came out within a few days of the much heralded release is a bit of an admission that things weren't as good as they could have been.

With my iPad, I've definitely got a reduction in battery life - it seems that the Bluetooth keeps turning itself on at random.

Not the cause...

There is a function now in the OS that allows background apps to wake up and refresh.

It needs turning off if you don't want to burn more battery.

I haven't noticed a change in battery life on my iPad 4 or the ip5.

As a comparison, windows 7 was shipping and had patches as it shipped!

So it is the cause then Tombie. The fact that iOS7 has introduced a new feature that now allows background refresh where iOS6 did not, that is a new change introduced that would affect battery life is it not?

And yes, I had turned the background refresh off, but the two updates I'd done over the last few days must have switched it back on again.
