Hi all, new here and have some questions I tried to answer by using the search feature which did not help me that much (probably my fault)
As I understand it the post 03 TD5 is the better engine, with the easier to program ECU and other improvements.
But the earlier ones have the stronger Salisbury diffs, did they overlap at some point?
In other words, is it possible to find a 03+ TD5 with Salisbury diffs?
Is there any other info I need to know before I start looking for vehicle to buy.
Thank you in advance.

02 was the last of the Salisbury diffs I think. Not hard to find a sals or fit one if your keen.

They fit up in all the same places, but you will have to shorten the P38 prop shaft, or grab the one from where the diff comes from.

actually I see your looking at a 130. I believe the 130 diff is of heavier construction, so pending what your up to, a donor 130 would be best. I'd worry more about the motor and other running gear before a diff. It's not a deal breaker.

Ok, thanks, so a 03 onwards TD5 and as for the diffs i can always replace the axles with heavier duty ones i suppose, irrespective of a Salisbury diff or not.

Replaced my rear axles on my chipped td5 130 after stripping a drive flange and stuffing an axle.

OK more pondering, from what I've seen on the market ATM, '03+ models with around 150 to 200 K's go for around $25000 to $28000.
'98 to '02 around $11000 to $15000 with 300+ K's.
Considering I would like to (slowly) replace :Radiator with alloy higher capacity one, tougher axles, better exhaust, some suspension work, larger intercooler, general interior mods, etc, wouldn't I be better off buying the earlier model (provided the body is in good condition, with no rust) and spending the extra dough on the bits and pieces with the view of replacing engine with reconditioned 03+ and computer in a couple of years time?

Ran a 99 130 for several years. Had all the usual probs.. Plastic head dowels, oil in the harness, but it had the Salisbury and I did all the mods.. Hardened shafts, bigger tyres etc.. You can always put a later flashable ECU on the earlier Td5... (Talk to Tombie on here... He's the whiz on all things Td5 ECU!). I ended up going bigger with a 101... Salisburys both ends and room for 5.9 litres of Cummins!! :)
