Gone bump :(

Hopefully they'll be resurrected, otherwise the supply of the 18" rimz for the D4/RRS is gone. Website is still up, but I noticed on pistonheads someone had ordered wheels recently off it and been refunded the following day.

Oh crap!
Looks like they will be worth a few extra dollars second hand.

Oh poop.
I received mine very, very recently.....good luck for me but Very bad luck for others.
However, seriously....why don't LR come to the party on this....surely they could have made a quid?
Or they could have made the brakes smaller and have no need for a band-aid....LOL!!!

LR went out of their way to prevent fitment of 18" rims by adding wings to the calipers. 19" with shorter sidewalls for faster and more accurate steering response assists the sporty image they seem to want.

Wow.....
There is no doubt about it, mine is a much better drive with the 19" Scorpion ATRs than with the 18" LTZs .... but as an option all I see is win, win.
What would I know .... LOL???!!!
Thanks Graeme.

Hope they sort themselves out, further down the track I was going to order more for a trailer.
Just a thought ( I am no engineer), rather than have modified rims, what about modified brake calipers? Is it not possible to make smaller calipers that are as powerful? Then you could run 17's instead:)

The South Africans are doing this. There is also another 18" wheel that clears the calipers however the offset is changed too much.

I'm running king steelies in 17 inch, according to there website they make an 18inch as well. Not sure what the offset on the 18 is but on the 17 it's 30.

Very good question and one I've asked a few times and it's never been answered. How do all those large non-LR products get 17 and 18" wheels on their 4WDs and still pass the design regs?
If GGHAGGIS designed the Compomotive wheels and got them approved, I'd hope he patented the outcome. You'd think with the proven track record of sales any company (local?) would take the job on.

Gordon only imports the rims, you can put D3 or 2.7L D4 calipers on the later 3.0Ltr D4s, the ones that have don't seem to have any braking problems.

But one could have serious issues with insurance and the Police if there was an accident, especially where injury was involved. My understanding of it is if you change the brakes without getting it engineered would make the car unroadworthy.

I'm not 100% but I'm reasonably sure Gordon was the man that designed the wheel. He may have worked on an existing model and got those mods approved but I'm pretty certain it was his leg work.
I'm also pretty certain that Compomotive did not stock these wheels as shelf items, there must have been some contract or something in place to make them exclusive.
Might have that all wrong but that was my take on it.

Kev.

Busy time, but we've been working with some of the key personnel in the UK to ensure that the 18" rims will still be available - the name may change, but the rims will be the same.
Cheers,
Gordon
PS +30mm offset rims on a LR are illegal in most states.

Not wanting to steal Gordon's glory but I am pretty sure the Compomotive 18 s were made for Bowler Offroad the makers of the Bowler Nemesis (based loosely on a Sport). Have a look at their website Bowler | Racing and High Performance all terrain vehicles (http://www.bowlermotorsport.com)
I was lucky to get a ride in a Nemesis last year at Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Can't you get them made in Oz?

Kev, I went to the Oz manufacturers first (most of them have the manufacturing contracted out to China) - none of them were prepared to take it on.
The rim design I ended up with was based on the Compomotive "Bowler" rim - they sent me out a couple of rims FOC for me to break/play/re-design. Brilliant guys to deal with and so I wouldn't consider changing now.
Cheers,
Gordon

You can order King steel rims with any off set you want. The rims are basically custom made to order.

That's more than fair enough Gordon, I just got the impression that they were out of the market and you were looking for a new manufacturer.
Good luck mate....I'm very impressed with my Compomotive wheel and tyre combo thus far.
Week on Moreton Island starting Sunday....so we'll see how they go on hi-silica sand with a bit of weight on board...LOL!!!
Cheers,
Kev.
