I noticed a metallic rattle - I was thinking it was like a loose metal guard on the exhaust or a baffle in the muffler - but it seems to be coming from the transfer case, but its there even when the auto is in park. Have just on 200K and no known work on the transmission. Drives fine.
Cannot hear it driving, but it is a TD5....
any ideas? Thanks

The bolts that hold the vibration damper onto the rear of the transfer case (near the hand-brake drum) could be loose.

Could possibly be the handbrake shoe retaining springs getting weaker and allowing a bit of buzz in there.

If it has a bellows style of flexible section in the exhaust pipe just below the turbo then the flexible section may have stretched which causes a rattle from its internal limit stop. Lifting the exhaust from below the joint whilst idling will silence the rattle if this is the cause, for which the permanent fix is to have a wire style section fitted which will also improve exhaust flow considerably as the flexible section has almost a 50% restriction.

Ok - thanks for those suggestions - I will have another look later today - when I won't wake the neighbours!

As said check the exhaust flex joint, some have had rattles from them.
Also check the heat shield over the centre muffler hasn't come loose, my RRC classic rattles from here.
Also look at the turbo heat shield, the rear mount is a known rattler too.
Good luck.

And the heat shield from the LH transfer case rubber mounting can be very noisy too if it is broken and vibrating or even touching the exhaust pipe as I have seen them drop down when cracked.

Centre muffler heat shield will make a racket if that is loose. The clips work loose. If you have a look on the RAVE cd there is a bulletin which recommends replacing the clips with a flanged nut. It's m6 or m8 - I just used flat washers and nuts and put thread locker on the nuts.

Thanks Gary - you win! It was the best 10 seconds I've spent with a 15mm ring spanner. Both 15mm bolts were loose, nipped them both up and it certainly smoothed things up.

The flex plate when cracked will also make a metallic rattle, mainly at idle. You won't hear it at revs or the frequency increases to above audible. I had it at idle and chased it but fortunately the auto failed first.

Ok, back 'home' and have a rattle at 2250RPM in all gears when cold.
It disappears when warm?
At least I have a great list here now to check off.
This place is an excellent resource when you're new to an engine. :D

Hope its not the flexplate [bigsad].
That was my first thought....
and sounds like it's coming from that area.
The noise is still there when warm, not totally gone but is much more subdued.

Try pulling the handbrake on "gently" when you are driving at 2100-2200 RPM.
If the noise stops you have scored backing plate and worn linings.

Cheers Philip, will try this in the morning.
I just found your thread.
want to see why the TD5 handbrake rattles? (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2-a/186371-want-see-why-td5-handbrake-rattles.html)

Looks like what it is, thanks for the heads up.
Can feel it through the handbrake lever until the shoes start to engage the drum.

Harmonics/balance of the 5 I'm guessing.
Never had it on the Tdi Deefer either, although 'refinement' and 'quietness' aren't quite Defender long suits so I may not have noticed it over the 'character' either :lol2:
