Hi All

I recently installed a Uniden remote head UHF in my D2. I was rather pleased with the install, so I thought I would write it up to give some ideas and hints for others contemplating doing it themselves.

So starting from the outside and working in.

Antenna install.
I used a ground independent antenna and a z bracket mount. The bracket needed a small amount of bending at the bottom to fit through the bonnet/side panel gap and then was simply secured using one of the side panel bolts on the passenger side of the car. I made a small hole in the bonnet rubber seal strip to feed the wire through.

Next job was getting through the firewall. If you pull back the firewall insulation in the corner above the wheel arch you can see a grommet with a thick bundle of cables passing through. Removing the horn makes it a bit easier to gain access. I made a small hole and used a bit of coat hanger wire to thread the coax cable through. Also make sure that you feed the coax neatly behind the pipes running along the side of the engine bay before you feed it through the firewall or you'll have to do it all again :)

Inside the car I removed the cardboard kick panel under the glove box pulled coax cable through and fed it behind the dash across to the drivers side. Finally installed the screw on coax plug and soldered the centre wire in.

Transceiver box & mic install.
I mounted the radio transceiver box using good quality double sided tape on the inside of the drop down panel under the steering wheel. Both the panel and radio bracket were well cleaned using isopropyl alcohol, before the tape was applied. For power I took the positive off an empty relay socket at the bottom of the fuse panel (Its a TD5). Used a multi meter to find a pin that was always live (centre right), crimped a spade terminal to the positive wire and inserted. Crimped an eye terminal to the earth wire and screwed that on a bracket to the left of the fuse box. There's a handy a threaded hole on the bracket.

Finally I ran the mic extension cable along under the centre console and fed it out beside the drivers seat. The mic bracket was attached to the coin tray face using double sided tape after again cleaning both faces with isopropyl alcohol.

All up it took a couple of hours including a coffee and testing.

Cheers
