All I really want is an electronic map reader / moving map so I know where my location is instead of looking at paper maps when out 4wdriving.
I have an older non gps Aldi tablet that I am thinking of turning into my offroad map reader. I need to get an external gps antenna for it, and some sort of map reader / navigation software.
As I already have numerous paper topo maps of my local area that I like to go to, is there any way I can scan these then import to the tablet. Or would I be better off trying to locate them at Geoscience Australia and import from there.

I have an app on my ipad called PDF maps. As the name suggests it reads PDF files. Not sure how to load my own yet though, still working on that but it can be done. It is a fairly simple moving map that shows a dot and a circle where you are, and a pointer showing the direction of travel. Basic, but it works well.

I use an external GPS on my ipad as it is only a wireless version. Can't recall the name of it at the moment, and I think it only works with iPads, but there are generic ones out there that should work with your tablet.

Bacicat,

Where have you sourced your electronic maps from - oziexplorer or somewhere else? Do they include off road tracks?

Just did a quick search and there is a Beta version of PDF maps for Android now.

Index of /downloads/ozi/NSW/25k (http://maps.festy.org/downloads/ozi/NSW/25k/)

Oziexplorer is no go for apple products at the moment, so I've got all mine for free or very cheap. I'm no tech head, so I've just been digging around looking for stuff. The PDF maps online library has heaps of stuff, a lot of it free.

Thanks for the info so far guys.
If I have an on road GPS already could I connect that to the tablet as a GPS antenna?

If you don't already have Firefox:

1. download Firefox and run it.
2. go here and download "downloadthemall": DownThemAll! (http://www.downthemall.net/)
3. Go to the maps link: Index of /downloads/ozi/NSW/25k (http://maps.festy.org/downloads/ozi/NSW/25k/)
4. Select them all as you would select items in a Word doc or similar
5. Right click and select 'Download them All!..."

Brilliant!

Then you should be able to extract all the zip files at once using WinZip or WinRAR.
