Hi All
What sort of kms are we expecting out of an LT230 transfer (is that right?) before a rebuild? It is the main shaft that requires attention?
Mine has done 180,xxxkms. Its just in having clutch shudder issues sorted. Mechanic reports no slipping....so gearbox came out today. Waiting to hear how things look tomorrow.
Are there any tell tale signs with the transfer or will things just go bang? Is it worth doing the preventative maintenance (be a $1000+ surely to remove transfer and open up?) or just wait and buy a reconditioned one when needed?
Thanks,
Mike

hi ive got a 300tdi 110 same transfer box with 320,000ks been around aus a couple of times and spends a lot of time in low range up here in cairns.
still good. also had a series 2 td5 2000 model manual, sold it best thing I ever did but the transfer case was still good after 250,000ks.
the main thing is to watch for leaks if you find one check the transfer case oil level every 5000ks transfer case should be good for at least 300,000ks if maintaned good luck with the clutch cheers

Hi Mike,
Like mudder, unless the transfer box has been neglected or down right abused it will cruise past 180k. I had a D1 with 320k on it, the transfer gears themselves were fine, the issue I had was an oil leak between the transfer case and the back of the gearbox. When I took the transfer case off I found the O-rings on the main shaft had gone hard and there was evidence of fretting inside the aluminium housing, there wasn't a lot I could do about it.
I fitted new o-rings and the leak stopped however I fear that the leak would return eventually, this being sooner rather than later. I sold the D1 and moved into a Deefer, this has got 189k on it and there is no problem with the transfer case. Saying that prior to me buying the vehicle it has a full service history. I'm not sure about the quality of the servicing after some of the things I've found, however the book has been stamped.

Hi , the Land Rover transfer boxes ,have got a good reputation , there very strong , if looked after , ie change oil they give good service . engines , diffs , and main gearboxes usually go before the Transfer box , cheers jimr1 ..

The parts in the LT230 that wear the fastest are the shims behind the planetary gears in the centre diff.
At 180k I would say they will have gone completely. Mine had gone by 100k.
It is well worth changing them, and not especially hard.
The intermediate shaft is the one that is sealed with O'rings and can wear the housing out of round. It may or may not have done this. If it isn't leaking I would be tempted to leave it alone.
