First-time D2 Owner

Hi all,

I have now owned our D2 for a couple of weeks now and thought it was timethat I shared some of the details with you.

The vehicle we bought is a 2000MY auto (wanted a manual) with ACE and SLS,it has been fitted with a bulbar, winch, dual battery system, spotlights and arear camp light - I think that's about it. At the moment it has SUVtyres, will probably go for AT tread when the time comes. I think I shouldget myself a radio as the first piece of additional equipment, after that I cansee 50mm lift, snorkel, rock sliders instead of the side steps that it has atthe moment, maybe an engine remap (haven’t really put any thought into that yet).In the meantime I will be doing a few minor low cost mods myself; raise oilbreathers, the option B shuttle valve fix, replace factory CD player with MP3player already owned, make something to actuate the CDL lever frominside/outside the vehicle. The previous owners mechanic filled the coolingsystem with the green stuff so will be changing that ASAP (I hear that it isimportant not to mix).

I haven’t done any specific searches yet, but I am thinking of supplying thefactory accessories circuit for the vehicle from the non-main battery thecontrol voltage will still come from the main battery via the ignition switch;does anyone have thoughts on this idea?

I haven’t concluded (or even searched) but I think the climate control, temperaturecontrol loop is overshooting. But it could be the partner rapidly changing the setpoint creating this instability in control.

Hi welcome

Good to here you have found us sounds like you have found a good base D2 and are looking to modify to your tastes.

You seem to be up on some of D2 traits coolant etc so keep reading for more info.
My tips don't splash out on mods too soon you my need some cash for unexpected repairs.

If modding try another D2 with the mod you fancy first and way up the change before you fit.

Standard alpine stereo pretty good it can be retro fitted with iPod lead (I use a Grom) plugs into back of stereo into CD stackers inputs so good hard wired connection not via FM signal will charge iPod and you can use steering select switches.

Grabber AT2 great tyres look good work well.

D2 is a good choice but if looked after well will reward you well try and do as much work on you car as you can you will find good info here and elsewhere on the net the more you can learn the more you will be in tune with the car they do talk (drip drip squeak rattle knock etc)

Welcome to the D2's. Sounds a nice rig, be aware that for new outfits pics are required! :D Green coolant is nothing to be worried about, provided it is OAT . It does come in green or red, some say green is less problematic? Changing the accessories circiut over maybe more trouble than gain. Just use the aux battery for all new additions, 'fridge, camp lighting, power outlets, etc Do a search regarding a CDL actuator but the best after market so far is by www.discovery2.co.uk / D2 CDL levers..... Welcome, sounds as though you picked up a well equipped rig.

The "option b fix" is repair for a specific problem with the ABS modulator which is one of a number of potential causes of the three amigo's. I wouldn't recommend that you do the fix as preventative maintenance or a mod unless you currently have the amigos.

Despite the hysteria promulgated on the forum about the three amigo's they don't effect every D2 all of the time. In three years of ownership (2000MY Td5 Auto) I have seen the amigo's once when the brakes squealed during a trip to the Flinders Ranges two years ago. They cleared after turning the ignition off and on, and they haven't been seen since. Basically if it ain't broke, don't fix it. ;)

With regards the CDL lever, the one Schuy linked to is probably best mechanical lever on the market, with the possible exception of a factory d2a version. It really comes down to priority you put on the aesthetics and ease of operation - once you move away from the factory style levers you are invariably trade off one or both those factors.

Again welcome. Your best investment could be the RAVE CD from Dave's Shop on this site - still $16.50 delivered I think (see "Shop" in the first/top box above).
Also becoming a "subscriber?" at $29.50 pa helps to maintain the site and gets rid of some of the pop up ads.

Getting a Nanocom early is a good investment. Soon pays for it self. At 14 years old, if your having three amigos problems. Think about a overhauled modulator. Might be better in the long run. Wish I had.
