View Full Version : Mig - No Gas

I have noticed that my Mig has been doing crap welds lately with a few holes and crap in the welds - I blamed the operator.
Yesterday went to do some welding and again crap welds - cleaned up the nozzle and checked the feed and could hear the gas coming through but I noticed that after the initial burst the gas stopped despite wire still being fed. I upped the gas pressure to 20 and still the same.
If you stop the feed and start again, gas comes through again but stops - so gas is only coming through when wire feed starts but does not continue.
Suggestions?? Faulty regulator/gauge or something in the welder??
Thanks

Hi mate
I had many welders have that problem...when gas stops flowing weld turns to Aero bar,its called porosity no inert gas envelope to prevent oxidisation........The faults are either..... ****ed gauge.....or a little { ithink its called a solenoid] in the welder that could also be ****ed.......listen near wire feeder for the gas solenoid thing operating...........our sparky fixed it in a jiffy.........its a process of elimination...start with the Gauge.

Also check that its not a kinked/crushed gas hose prior to the welder.
I've sometimes had the issue with air tools where there's pressure at the tool, but as soon as you pull the trigger it stops. Twist in the hose or similar can allow pressure but now flow.
I'd also drop the hose off the regulator and make sure you've got good flow there for a start.

Hello,
This often happens when the bottle is empty gives a little pressure then has none to give, if new bottle then the what has been suggested is the way to go. To check the regulator undo the hose going to the welder and open the bottle if you have continuous supply of gas then look at the welding machine solenoid.

As the regulator is 20 years old and has previously played up I went and got a new CIG model and put it on and the old mig was back doing what it should. Welds are still crap but at least this time it is the operator and not the the equipment.
Thanks - easily fixed.
Cheers
