If anyone else was having trouble creating a virtual machine within their computer to run XP or similar so they could run microcat etc, there is a free program which has finally worked on my machine. Its called Oracle Virtual Machine and is very powerful/flexible - works on my Win 7 64 Professional and it says it will work on Win 8 and any number of other systems as the host. Cheers Gavin

I've been using the Oracle VM software for quite a while, and it has handled everything I've thrown at it...

S - do you use the old ATO etax, or if you have a simple update replacement, would you be prepared to advise/recommend what you use? I have a very small one man semi retired type business which pays for a few small luxuries and I need a replacement for my ATO etax program before it crashes into oblivion.
Or anyone?
Cheers Gavin

gavin,
i literally did this two weeks ago.
Opened oracle vm, went to ato.gov.au
Downloaded the xp version of etax.
Completed it online within oracle vm, voila.
Have done this for the last 4 or 5 years for as long as we have been an opensource house,

Long time user of Virtual Box on OSX - from pre-Oracle days. I use it to run XP and gets heavy use for IDA Pro, Microcat, Td5 Map Editor, Nanocom updater software (although that hasn't seen much use since last year  ) and basically anything that doesn't have an adequate OSX alternative.

RoverRescue - sorry, I thought you were talking about the old business version of e-tax that the ATO supplied for a number of years, then stopped supporting.
It was fine for my very small business purposes, but I suspect I need to get with the times and find a simple replacement, even though I can still do a paper version of my BAS reporting with it.

Under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit I'm using the free Microsoft Virtual PC running XP. See http://www.aulro.com/afvb/computers/136767-running-microcat-under-w7-64-bits.html
However, I haven't installed VM Player as shown in that thread so I'm not sure why it's required. Microcat 2009 seems to run fine without it.
As noted above, I can get an older version of MicroCat (2009) to run but not the 2012 version. It thinks it's out of date. MicroLaunch doesn't help.
I want the later version because a lot of parts have superseded part nos.
I can't find the MicroCat Date Change software on the 'net any more. I don't know if anyone here has it.

I think I've found why MicroLaunch won't work. Changing the date in XP under Virtual Xp doesn't work because it seems XP gets its date from Win 7.
I tried running it again after changing the date in Win 7 before loading the Virtual PC and the date matched. Running MicroLaunch got MicroCat past the out of date problem but now it's looking for a file called LREStart.dll. The only reference I can find on the 'net is in a website LRESTART.DLL Details. Is this file safe? Check the directory (http://www.isthisfilesafe.com/sha1/4BCEDA85DC34DED94A29973D0350648EAEA45EAA_details.a spx)
Note: first seen in the Russian Federation......

I had to install Oracle VM Virtual Box ( with Windows XP ) on my Windows 7 Computer to run my copy of Microcat. Wouldn't work other wise.

I got a copy of LREStart.dll and MicroCat March 2012 is now running in my Win 7 64 bit machine under Windows Virtual PC
It's actually installed in the MCLRE directory under the name LREStart.1. Renaming it should get it all working.
MicroCat starts in Russian so you'll need this page to get beyond start up http://www.aulro.com/afvb/computers/145168-lr-microcat-v2012-01-a.html
