Wife called saying someone noticed something leaking under the deefer in the KFC drive through, she pulled over in to a car park and saw oil. I drove down and I am now waiting for LR assist or whoever they send to take the car to the dealer, big issue we are sitting outside a Toyota dealer!! Any idea what would cause this?

300TDi or TD5? Possible that it is an oil cooler hose joint let go.

Sorry guys, yep it is a 2009 Puma.

Really worried now, it has lost nearly all of its oil they drove it onto the flat bed and the engine was noisy, I am just hoping there is not any damage to the engine. It was going in for a service next week anyway so won't have to pay for oil twice, and I wonder what the will charge me for disposing of the oil :)

I am trying to be humorous about it so I do not think of the bill that could come.

Looks possibly like the oil filter housing o ring. I've heard that they can fail if the housing is not torqued up enough, or the oring is reused. Definitely don't run it whilst it's low on oil.

Looks dramatic, hope all is okay, have you any warranty left on the Defender

Thanks, no warranty left so I am up for the bill, I suppose it is good it happened now, we leave for Cairns next Friday, would not have been good with 2 kids in the car.

Yep, looks like oil filter housing leak to me. Wasn't aware of the o-ring issue, thanks for the useful heads up!

I don't like the sound of the engine being a bit noisy (pardon the pun) - hopefully the bottom end is ok.

Well just got it back and spot on by you lot, it was the O'ring that failed.

I was asked when the filter was last changed, and I advised him 10k ago when you guys serviced it.. Anyway it is such a relief, $365 seems a bit much for 3lt of oil, a $25 filter and Labour, but hey I had a nightmare weekend and had $1000s running through my head.

But no damage to the engine and was obviously still some oil left in.

I will be changing my own filter every other service now just to make sure it is done..

Cheers
Pat

Thanks for getting back to us with the problem. Glad it was nothing to serious,
Keep a eye and ear on the bottom end for further issues
