Hello all, due to the wife not liking the current disco I am looking for an upgrade. I am thinking of an Discovery 2a form 2003 or 2004

I would like to know if the following can be swap from an Discovery 1a 300tdi to and Discovery 2a td5
1. Front Heavy Duty Axles and CV joints (these are from Rover Tracks USA Rover Tracks | Life on the trails in Colorado (http://rovertracks.com/) web site doesn't work any more)
2. ARB Air diff locks
3. Wheels. Do the D1 rims fit an D2?
4. Rock sliders from Justin, DRanged on this forum. I will just PM him.

What are the odd types of things to look for when buying an used TD5?

The old D1 will be off load unreg as I doubt I could sell it with custom body work from trees that did not move fast enough and clear coat that just wont stay on. Also what would be the best way to get rid of a vehicle like this.

Cheers
Navron

rims wont fit, front cv's are different, not sure about axles,
dill locks same I think, sliders should go, but may be short on d2?
simms metal will help it go away

does wife mean wife, or girlfriend?

is this something new I don't know about?:o

Rims are different>
CV's different>
ARB Lockers will fit as usual 24 spline.
Axles not sure, but think different.
Sliders will be a bit short, but not by much. (so use them)

Re buying a 2nd hand D2 Td5.
Search for one that has had the head gasket replaced.
Most tend to require replacement around 250K.
Alternatively a low k car would be worth while to explore.
Auto is usual ZF and manual is R380, so easy to replace if required.
Try to avoid buying one with the 3 amigo's showing in orange (Traction, abs, hill decent).
Ends up costing money to sort.

The D2 I am thinking of looking at this vehicle (if the owner get back to me)

If how grubby that is inside, and the handbrake adjustment are anything to go by I would be getting a lot more decent pics sent through before flying down.

Thanks Harry,
Although the V8 with tree kisses sounds nice I don't think it will fit the requirement of not driving around in something that doesn't look good.

thanks Skiboy, I find someone with one of those tools, just need the right vehicle first

E-bay is your friend, plenty on there not great quality but will do the job. You can even buy air operated nutsert tools if you're keen ( I would but I'm a lazy *****, that' why I drive autos :D:D:D).

Speaking of Auto's I just drove my first Auto Discovery yesterday. Weird feeling and they seem to lack instant take off like the manual does. I know quite of few of you have auto's but what would you prefer off road?

From looking around it seems that there are only auto's D2 for sale except for 1 base model manual.

(hope that question does start any trolling, I am looking for real experience answers from someone that has only ever driven manuals)

Get with the program navron, autos beat manuals hands down.
Just use the lever like a manual, they are designed to do that, hill starts are a non event, descents are a non event.
Autos aren't the old fashioned things they were 50 years ago

Manuals are best :D

Which program is that Harry? Thanks guys..

From googling around, I found that out that only the base model has an manual and the wife wants an HSE if possible and an SE if not. So it looks like I will be joining the other group now.

Re the 3 amigos.

Have a scan tool (nanocom or similar) on hand when you look. I always scan for faults before buying, especially private sales.

IMO don’t be too concerned about the amigos, they are not hard or expensive to fix, and ALL D2s will get them sooner or later, there are a couple of causes but most suffer from a basic design fault with the ABS modulator. My ’99 first displayed them about 12 months ago, cost couple hours of reading/research, a $4 electrical connector and about 1 hour to fix. All issues that could bring on the amigos sound much scarier than they are.

Thanks Harlie,

That is an interesting read about nanocom on :: Nanocom :: (http://web.nanocom.it/default_i.cfm)

What type of faults should I be looking for apart from the ABS, traction control and hill decent ?

When I find a vehicle to buy, I see if someone here has one of those devices that I can borrow the the day.

Cheers

I’d be concerned with something logged for the engine or transmission.

Most issues recorded in the SLABS (controls ABS, HDC ect) are very easy to trace. Either SVS (shuttle valve switches) or Wheel Sensor (will tell you which one) will trigger amigos. Probably the worst case is if the SVS has brake fluid leaking in to them, but again is an easy fix. An amigo fault would not put me off at all.

A quick hit to google or us here will get an answer for most things.

Seriously, the D2 is not a complicated beast, it’s pretty simple to DIY – but if you are going to look after it yourself, you NEED access to a diagnostic kit. Nanocom or Hawkeye are good because they are not VIN locked.

I would offer my Nanocom for you to use while looking but my Dad has it up north.

And of course general checks you would have previously done for a car purchase.

I have a Nanocom you could borrow.

I've done the full modulator rebuild on ours and its not hard and I haven't seen an error in 6k km now.
