View Full Version : 90 rear storage, done.

Well, I got the rear storage about 3 weeks ago, the day before we set off on our road trip.

I ended up using 15mm ply for the tops and 12mm for the sides/bottom.

I made it so that if I needed I could remove the centre section and have full height from floor to roof, probably will never to but its done if I do. I carpeted it so that if removed it still is finished :D

What isn't carpet, is painted.......OCD ;)

I settled on using 4 of the Wolf pack boxes as I liked the ease of use, being able to remove to pack and use on site, and also to use the empty space for other stuff when not travelling/camping, for example our overnight bags fit under there neatly.

I utilised the Boab tie down rails, the piccies show 3 but there is now 4 fitted evenly across, ;)I had made provision for the 4th when making it.

The side boxes are bolted down through the seat belt mounts and the seat pivot mounts. The side tracks bolt though the lot and the wheel box with large pan washers underneath. The main centre box is mounted through the sides into the captive nuts from the seat pivots. I don't think any of it would move if the unimaginable happened.

I also fitted a rear door gas strut.

Well here are some pics to prove it happened :D

Thanks mate, thats a bummer it certainly makes things easier for travelling. It was great over the past 3 weeks cruising about, I just strapped everything down in those black toughman 50 litre boxes from bunnings on the top as well as the under deck.

I bet it was. That'd be such a handy setup even for everyday use.

Very nice job, Cracka.
Have you found the bulkhead removal bar gives you more room?
Was it difficult to remove the bulkhead?

Cracka

Thanks guys.

Dave, the Pumas in Aus don't have a bulkhead. The station wagon versions in the UK, do, as far as I'm aware.

Cracka, What a beautiful job you've done mate, it absolutely looks like factory. I see you've done the soundproofing as well, & your "trimming" ability appears to be spot on too, as the carpet looks very good...no loose edges/corners etc.
Top Job, Pickles.

Looks absolutely sensational. I just posted another thread (before I saw this one) asking about how to bolt such a setup into the car.

How is yours secured to the vehicle?

G'day Preacher, thanks.

Ok, the side wings we'll call them, You can see in the second photo I used 10mm bolts (sticking up in the photo) down through the wheel boxes where the seat pivot brackets were. Along the other edge (outside of vehicle) at the back end I used an 8mm bolt down through into the seat belt mounting bracket, the 8mm hole is where the little ball fitting to stop the seat belt anchor spinning was. At the front end I used another 8mm bolt down through the wheel box. All bolts that are not into a captive bolt or bracket have large pan wahers on the rear side to spread the load.

Then, with the load rails, they are fixed on top of the carpet and bolted all the way to the undeerside of the wheel box with 1/4' metal threads.

The centre section, I constructed with the top overhanging the side panels by 19mm. All timber I bonded with titebond 2 glue. Where I overhung the top section was so that I could epoxy glue a strengening member of 45 x 19mm so that in the event of a capsize:D the cargo underneath wouldn't pop the top off and spill it all through the cabin.

This centre section was bolted through the sides with 4 x 8mm bolts going in to the captive nuts on the upright section of the wheel box where the seat brackets were bolted, the furthest forward and rearward ones.

The load rails on the centre section are held down using 1/4" metal threads into T nuts.

I'm pretty confident it isn't going anywhere it's mounted more securely than other 'pro' manufacutred jobs that I have looked at some of which I have seen just use a small wire D fixed to the plywood with a couple of self tappers .

Hope this is clear enough.

Leroy, I have a few, here ya go. I had to use 10mm plastic spacers that I just got off ebay. I had to scribe them around the ribs on that speaker panel for them to fit.

These were 6" Vibe. I also used Vibe Lite Air 4" splits for the front.

Hans, I did it is a SAAS star shopsaas (http://www.shopsaas.com/html/sw_star.html)

This is the distance from the instrument binnacle with the standard wheel

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/02/1067.jpg (http://s232.photobucket.com/user/Cracka63/media/Landy/DSC03508.jpg.html)

This is the distance with the new wheel, it only bought it forward about 12mm which was perfect for me.

I used a Momo boss kit with it part No. HUB K5613. The centre Land Rover is from a member on Defender2.net, he some made in metal.

You need to trim some height off the small rim of the steering column surround that normally sits up behind the standard wheel. Its not difficult from memory it was only a few mm

and also is yours a 48 splines or 36 splines?

G'day Martin,

Not a problem mate, glad I can help someone. I think it makes it so much more comfortable to drive.

Mine was a 48 spline but MAKE SURE you take your wheel off and count yours before ordering, apparently there is no hard an fast rule at Solihull as to what goes on where, they just use what they have at hand.

I bought if from Auto Tek who are the Momo importers for Australia and have been since the 70's, around then anyhow. Nice people, it is still a family owned business (Romans). I ordered by phone 03-93304443, they are in Tullamarine, Vic.

March last year I paid $109.99 for the boss and $9.09 freight, very reasonable I thought.

Sorry for digging up an old thread.

Cracka, any chance you could get the photos back up?

I'm looking for some inspiration for my own 90 and these comments make your setup seem pretty flash! :D
