Hi,I recently bought a 2003 Defender and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with soundproofing one. This is my second Landrover having owned a SeriesIII before which is when the love affair began.I'm also interested in any information on the chip upgrade. How much does fuel economy suffer? All experiences appreciated.Safe travelling, Duncan.

Welcome Duncan,
not sure in Oz,, but check out LRO mag for websites in Pommyland, they may distribute here.
If England is so cold,, why do Pommy heaters never work?

Duncan I have a 2002 Defender with home made soundproofing and a Bruce Davis Chip upgrade. I purchased soundproofing material from a place in Brisbane which makes it for boats and just made my own. Seems to work ok. The chip upgrade actually gives better economy well drive as normal because the chip blueprints fuel delivery. However obviously when the extra power is required more fuel is used. Overall though my is just the same although my friends economy has improved (Disco 11)

If you are serious about driving a defender without hearing much engine or road noise...get the thickest peice of insulation you can find and wrap it around your head with Duc Tape!!

Seriously, I am looking at trying reduce a bit of the noise as the Defender is our "good" car and the wife bitches a bit (as they all do).

I am starting with some underbonnet insulation from that mod in Melbourne.

Then I will be looking at heat/acoustic insulation above the g/box and on the fire wall as the handbrake does get damn hot some time.

Once I have a go at these I will reassess what need doing.

Guys,
I'm dragging this out again as I am also investigating some noise reducing options. Bit of thermal protection around the transmission tunnel and firewall wouldn't go astray either .

I would like to know how you went.

I have scoured the internet and found several companies who have produts but I am still in research mode. If anyones want some links, here:

Material from where ?

Is the insulation inside or outside the cabin ?
If outside (eg under transmission tunnel) doesn;t it get full of sand or dirt and rubbish ?

How did you go about 'making' the soundproofing ? Was it just a matter of gluing it on in sheets? What adhesive to use ?

These answers would no doubt be of interest to others as well as my good self.

I have ordered the Noisekiller kit from the UK and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. It is said to reduce idle noise by 4db.

Also in the garage is a can of bitumen paint. This will go under the wheel arches, and on the doors after I pull the trim off.

I will do before and after soundmetering tests and keep you all posted. Stock, then soundkit, then paint.

More info, PM me. Anyone in Melbourne is welcome to come and see what difference it makes to my car when it's done.

Another good way to decrease noise would be a GKN overdrive. Now I've installed the tacho it seems we're doing an unsightly amount of RPM at 110.

Robert,
How much did the kit set you back if I might ask?
And where or who did you order it from?

I might just take you up on a peek later. I am in melbourne too.

Prices are on the NK site; use something like www.xe.net/currency/ to convert. Add shipping to that too. steve@noisekiller.co.uk.

I know you're in Melbourne, you processed my LROCV membership!

Just emailed them; said it left them this week, should be with me by next weekend. Not good considering I ordered it 4 weeks ago and my card has been charged. But anyway, let's see how it works.

Cheers

Yes definitely keep us posted, please !

A few photos of the installation (ie a step by step) and your impressions / results and you would have a KILLER article for a newsletter style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Tell me more about this overdrive, then..... what's the story with it ?

I might write it up as a wider soundproofing article for a 4WD mag. At the very least it'll go on my website.

I'm told the kit will now be with me before next weekend.

Overdrive; basically another gear you can engage on 3, 4, and 5th by means of a button on the gearlever. It's a planetary gear, like an auto.

So you're up to 80 in 5th (2100rpm in a TD5). In a normal Defender you'd just accelerate and run the engine at crazy revs to get up to 100 or 110.

With the overdrive, you hit the button, the car changes gear, revs, noise, fuel consumption and engine stress drop. So you have 8 forward gears in high range.,

Good stuff, don't you think?

$3000, I'm told. Brown Davis is the Sydney distrib.

Perhaps I didn't explain myself.
I know what an overdrive is I just didn;t know there were any Defender ones out there !

How does it 'change gears' at the push of a button ?

Do the gear ratios overlap or is new O/D 3rd higher than current O/D 5th ? (if you follow me)

$3K is a lot of money to me, is that installed or just the kit ?

The ratio is 28% higher. So OD3 wouldn't be higher than normal 5th, it'd be between normal 3 and 4.

I think $3k was installed. I have other things to spend $ on at the moment, so haven't looked in detail.

How does it change gear at the push of a button? Exactly the same way automatics do, by the magic of planetary gears.

hi all
i am interested to hear how the soundproofing went with the noisekiller kit form the uk as i am thinking of buying the kit also.
has it made a reasonable difference?
was it hard to fit & did you opt for the adhesive backed matts?
