Who can recommend a Navigation app for the iPad. I'm used to Oziexplorer and have a lot of maps calibrated for it (like it very much, used it in Africa with an windowsbased Tablett. Worked perfect!) It's a pity there's no version for IOS.

I'm using the HEMA app and I'm very happy with that. I also have an app called GPS PRO HD. Cost $15 and allows you to cache google maps or similar and use them. I used that while in the UK recently and it was faultless. Never needed to use a road map or Car GPS.

I use hema for large scale mapping ie accross the state and Galileo for really fine detail ie 200m scale, it is based off open street maps and they can be pre scanned for offline use

HI

I am using MemoryMaps and am pretty happy with it.

It supports quite a few map types

Hema is Memory Map. Only difference is branding and the bundled maps.

Hi

Thanks for that, so the difference is mainly in the UI then?

It's mainly the splash screen and about screen ;)

This is a screen shot of Memory Map my iPhone - the license I have are on other devices so this is just in preview mode.

compare that with the iPhone shots on the iTunes store page.

I should add that the important differences are all about the map licensing.

Hema - full hema Australian mapping licensed for five iOS devices.

Memory Map - full hema Australian mapping license for 2 mobile devices (iOS, android, wince ) 139US or 2 mobile + 2 PC for $179US. You can also buy individual regions - eastern australia, northern australia, Western Australia, and Great Desert Tracks as 2xmobile +2xPC packages for $63US each.

The PC licenses are required to run the mapping under the Memory-Map Navigator PC app for route planning etc on a desktop. If you buy Hema and decide you want the PC licenses it will cost you an additional $139US.

It ultimately depends on your needs. If you only want the iOS coverage and need the full Hema Australia package the Hema app is the better choice. If you need PC coverage and/or mixed mobile devices licensing, or only want to buy a couple of regions Memory Map is the way to go.

cheers
Paul

Paul, are you not able to zoom in using the hema on say an iPhone or iPad?

I've added a bit to my reply above that might help make more sense.

Yes. Hema can be used on a maximum of 5 iOS devices linked to your iTunes account. That is the standard iTunes store license.

Memory Map's $179US is two mobile and 2 pcs. $139US for two mobile. The two mobile doesn't make much sense unless you need iOS + android or wince.

Aus Maps : Topo maps | 4WD maps | Australia maps | PC : iPad : Android | Memory-Map Aus/NZ (http://memory-map.com.au/digital-maps/topographic-maps-australia.html)

Hema Maps | GPS Software: PC, iPad, Android | 4WD maps | Memory-Map Aus/NZ (http://memory-map.com.au/digital-maps/topographic-maps-australia/hema-maps-australia-4x4-maps.html)

You can download the maps as zipped packages and upload via iTunes from this page:
Packaged Map Download : Hema maps, Marine Charts, Topo maps for PC, iPad or iPhone | Memory-Map Aus/NZ (http://memory-map.com.au/digital-maps/digital-map-shop-dms/digital-map-shop-dms-download-packaged-maps-android-ipad.html)

Whether you buy Hema or Memory Map depends on which licensing for the Hema maps suits you best. You can add any of the other mapping from the Memory Map store to either App with exactly the same pricing and conditions.

cheers

The two apps are identical except for the splash screen and about screen. The difference is down to the licensing.

Yes. If you have iOS devices can you just copy using iTunes >> Apps >> File Sharing.
Android should just be a matter of copying to the correct folder, transfering with SDCard.
On WinCE I had to authorise an SDCard and MM lets you export to the SDCard which makes it all pretty smooth.

The licensing is checked against the MM servers when you initially use the mapping on a device.

Hi

Has any one had any experience with the Mud Map 2 app? It sounds like it is a lot better for importing your own mapping and can handle geotiff and ECW imagery plus Ozexplorer maps.

In addition to published mapping, I also use custom geological mapping, geophysical, geochemical and satellite imagery in the field. OzexplorerCe handled all of this but alas is not available for IOS at present.

At the moment I'm using a bit of a mish mash of applications for field work on the iPad. Avenza PDF maps in the main one, as it can import geotiffs and uses the free Geoscience Australia 250k geopdf mapping. V2 has a lot of extra functionality it still doesn't handle ECW imagery. I also have used the basic version of Memory Map, along with a couple of GIS apps (GISroam and iGIS) which are pretty klunky and are restricted in what they can import.

Cheers

MudMap2 "handles" OZI and ECW via a PC map conversion utility.

The Map Converter is a Windows PC application for converting various raster map formats into the Mud Map Raster (.mmr) format. Mud Map Raster is a highly optimised mobile file format that delivers high performance on mobile devices. These files can be imported into Mud Map 2 for offline use.

Raster map formats supported
• GeoTiff
• ECW
• OziExplorer - ozf2 & ozfx3 (Some, but not all. See the section on OziExplorer maps below)

Download the Map Converter application (Build 20) - Release Notes

Terms of use

Installation: Double click the file to begin installation, follow the on screen prompts.

User Guide
1. Use the map converter to convert your raster map files into .mmr format.
2. Open iTunes and add the files to the documents directory of Mud Map 2.
3. In Mud Map 2 go to Menu > Maps > Import maps.
4. Follow the prompts.

DISCLAIMER: OziExplorer Maps

Some OziExplorer maps are encrypted and cannot be used by Mud Map 2. This free Map Converter software can determine if your OziExplorer maps can be used by Mud Map 2. Simply download it and try to convert your OziExplorer Maps. If your maps are successfully converted, they can be imported into Mud Map 2 for offline use.

Memory Map's PC app as a $50US "add-on" that allows you to import and calibrate 3rd party and scanned maps.

3rd Party Map Import (cost US$50)
All Memory-Map software applications are Free. However, this FREE software is limited to working only with maps published in the Memory-Map proprietary formats. If you have access to maps in other formats or want to scan and calibrate paper/digital images, you will require the "Import Maps" license extension. Below is a summary of the map formats available under this option.
GeoTiff standard digital map format.
TIFF images supported with TFW or TAB and Datum files.
JPG images with calibration information in JGW files
Scan and calibrate paper maps or use none geo-referenced digital images.
ECW format is not supported directly but is easily converted into the GeoTiff format by using the free utility ER Viewer from www.intergraph.com
Other supported formats include; Maptech’s BSB, NDI’s BSB and Softchart’s Nos/Geo

The lack of Ozi support is a bit of a pain, but can be worked around (up to a point) with http://www.gdal.org .

I've been using gdal to convert Ozi maps to geotiffs for use in MacGPS Pro. There are OSX packages available from http://www.kyngchaos.com/software:frameworks

Thanks for the info Paul.

I've been testing the Mud Map PC conversion utility. Doesn't like >400mb ECW's but I'm not surprised :) Standard Geoscience Aust 250K topo ECW's convert fine. I haven't tried any Ozf files yet.

I have purchased and used Memory Maps Utility as well, again works OK but doesn't do ECW's. The ER-mapper viewer does convert ECW to Geotiff but it is klunky from memory you either have to manually select the area of the image you want to convert or scale the display window to exactly fit the image before exporting. Not elegant!

Unfortunately there is no cheap/crippled version of Mud Map I can try before dropping $150 on the full one (unlike Memory Map) so I was curious as to how other people have found it.

Mud Map 2 is on sale on iTunes for $99. Seeing that it will accept Ozi files. I am sold. Just need to go buy some more itunes card from Woolies for a further 20% off.
