Hi
anyone know the thickness of the gasket material used on the top cover over the selectors on a series III gearbox?

This may sound silly but is there a gasket there. I have just looked at an old manual from the days I had a series three and in the sections on gearbox dismantling and selector forks reassembly it doesn't mention removing or replacing a gasket for the top cover. In most places where there is a gasket it mentions them. Also in the photo's and diagrams of refitting the top cover I can't see a gasket.
The manual is a Haynes and relates to the 4 cylinder.
Hope this doesn't just confuse the issue for you.

There is a tiny scrap of gasket left attached to the top cover of the one i have (got the box in bits) so assumed there had to be one.
about the try it with some rtv black silicone, i think, it should do the job IMHO

the army series used a thin paper type gasket but sometime in the 70s we started using that blue yank r.t.v.works great.just run a LIGHT bead around the top fit cover loosley and tighten about a hour later.
cheers
