Those that have been to the L/R Enthusiast Forum may remember the great debate on Geared Timing For TDI Motors.

Now Just before any follow up, I am looking to hear from any that have geared timing installed on their motor and have had same for some time and can give an unbias account of how things are going.

The reason is that I like the idea but now have reservations having read the outcome of the other forum.

Have looked at quite a few conversions. Most seem to be successful, although the benefits seen to be small. Belts seem to be not a good idea, but provided they are changed near regular intervals, should present no trouble. The Zeuss conversion costs about $2700 and is oil fed from the engine. The only bad report I got was from a firm who rebuild Land rover engines, and they reckon a vibration in the camshaft could be a problem. This is what turned me off the idea. Cheers

Although the idea of replacing the timing belt with a set of gears and forget about them forever is very appealing I decided agaist it. The reason:
As the links above suggest there is a very high possibility of failure. I did a bit of research myself before deciding and almost everyone (LR nuts, that is) was speaking against it. My timing belts haven't been giving me any trouble (yet :wink: )

These are a disaster for those that have had them fail badly.

Ken & Maria Wright (ph: 02 9939 6315) members of my club & friends, who appear listed on the Rovin' The Globe site, can tell a horror story and out of pocket experiences in the thousands ($), and have engineering/ metalurgy reports damning them. Their vehicle a 130 dual cab Defender has got every bell and whistle you could imagine, Ken is an aluminium speciallist engineer, owning his own business.

The guys from Rovin' The Globe came to our club with their vehicles and gave a talk of their experiences, very interesting actualy stopped me putting on Zues Gears.

Their 130 and Disco are amazingly well set up vehicles, they would be right up there with the very best set up cars I've ever seen.

Hope this helps any decisions.

they run quite a bit noisier than the belt too. this is due to vibrations being fed through the mechanical contact of the timing gears transfering noise through the engine. if the land rover remedy has been fitted to your tdi, you shouldn't still have undue wear on the belt. imagine how many timing belt changes you could do for $2700.

Belts are cheap and only take about 4 hours to change.
