hi all,
not too sure if this is the right place to post this.
however i have a 2007 puma with 147k on the clock. for a long time now, in fact since i have owned it from 113k kms, when cold and in low range the engine will surge badly on overrun or when climbing a steep hill in low range. i had been told it was the fuel pump, EGR and other bits and pieces. however just recently my father in law bumped into a wise young fellow out in the bush somewhere up north, he relayed my issues to him and this was his reply. "your thoughts on the EGR are somewhat correct however its not what you think, the EGR will be working properly its just what it does that is the issue. as the valve recycles gas from the exhaust the particulates in the gas are mixed with the oil vapour in the crankcase gas from the breather this mix very quickly turns to tar and blocks up the intake manifold." last sunday i had a chance to take a look, i cracked the manifold at the point where the EGR is fed in, the alloy unit that holds the MAF sensor i think, there was so much sludge built up that i rekon the tube had been reduced 5mm in diameter, a significant amount when it comes to air flow! i scraped as much out as i could and got my finger into the manifold to remove as much as i could also, there was a lot of build up within fingers reach. after reassembling the surging has basically gone, it accelerated noticeably faster and runs a lot quieter with significantly less engine rattle. once i have a spare set of manifold oring gaskets im going to remove and clean it properly, then get a BAS remap to shut the EGR for good.
i would highly recommend anyone with a high kays Puma to take the 15-20 minutes time out to crack the manifold intake have a look for this buildup as well.
