View Full Version : Trailer wiring on PUMA. Special loom plug available?

I've just fitted the towbar from my 130 to the 110 PUMA, which was pretty straightforward (it is a Hayman-Reece jobbie).

Now I am trying to get the wiring set up.

Behind a plastic flap, on the drivers side (right behind the tail lights/blinkers) there is a special connector which I am pretty sure is a direct loom connection for a trailer plug. It is square, and about 25mm x 20mm.

Is there such a thing as a loom kit that plugs into this? Would save me chopping the wires and using those horrid Scotch-lock connectors.

Have scanned eBay but nothing showed up. Go to Land Rover?

Cheers
David

I could never find one, I just cut the plug off and soldered/heat shrinked/ spliced the trailer plug loom in.

(The dealership did my current 110, and to be honest I'm too scared to look).

Looked into it but just cut and soldered in the end. Plug was too difficult for little gain. No problems to date.

Alright - so if I'm going to cut the plug off and solder it in, can anyone point me to a colour wiring diagram, of which colored wire on the Defender side of things goes to which pin on the trailer plug.

I'm using a 7 pin plug, so any chance the LR colours are going to match these colours:

hey David - dont dare use those scotch locks - I hate the way they half cut through wires and have had many failures in the past. Now I always solder and wrap.

Nope - I don't like them either. Solution of last resort!

I have got all the wires bared and ready to solder, I just need to know the colour codes on the Defender side.

Found an answer to my own question, and it was even here on AULRO. Dunno why the search function couldn't find it. Got it via Google.

The colour coding of the wires going into the connector and the function of those colour codes from the International wiring code table are as under:

Table 1
1 Green/red LH indicator
2 Green/brown Reversing
3 Black Earth
4 Green/white RH indicator
5 Purple Electric trailer brakes
6 Green/purple Stop
7 Red/black Rear and number plate lamps
8 Red/yellow Fog lamp switch to fuse
9 Red/orange Fog lamp fuse to fog lamp

The colour codes of the wiring for Australian standard trailer connections are:

Table 2
1 Yellow LH turn
2 Black Reversing
3 White Earth
4 Green RH turn
5 Blue Service brakes
6 Red Stop lamps
7 Brown Rear lamps, clearance and side marker lamps

hey thanks for finding that - will be useful for me as I am going to use that plug to wire in high mount LED lights for brake, turn, rear as an aid to the horridly dull but classic LR rear lights.........

Go to a wreckers, get one of a D2, they're the same.

I used to have the part number but can't find it anymore.

Not sure about Puma - but I imported one of these (http://www.paddockspares.com/ywj101500-kit-tow-electrics.html)for a Td5 130

Can't say I remember the part number either, but I bought one for my D2 and transferred it straight to the 2011 Defender. It was part of a kit, which was the Tow Tongue and loom. Works well, so as suggested maybe find a second hand one if a new ones a bit expensive. But from memory I think I thought it was a reasonable price.

Dealers did both my defenders and did a bodge job and ignored the plugs. Plugs must be more expensive than the labour

For the record, mine did the same - and a poor bodge at that :censored:

Dealers are largely hopeless...

I think I paid $10 including postage for a second hand trailer plug from a D2. Plugged straight in, easy as. I was told at the time that only Euro spec D2's came with the trailer plug lead, but not sure if that's correct so be worth checking any D2s in any dismantlers.

Land Rover make a wiring harness part number RO-LR005920 description N Type-Towing. The plug on my 130 Puma, right side above fuel tank behind filler, was in a plastic cover. The kit just plugs straight in and has a large 7 pin trailer plug ready to go. It`s well sealed and worth time you save, about $200, might get it cheaper else where. Hope that helps.

Hi all, this is a copy of my post on another thread , but no answers there.

I have been researching tow bar and trailer plugs here for a few nights now and purchased the RAA608 tow hitch and LR005920 yesterday for my new Defender 110.

I've been scratching my head all day looking at this LR005920 wiring kit and can't work out where to cut in the trailer brake controller.

Trailer Wiring Diagrams @ ExplorOz Articles (http://www.exploroz.com/Vehicle/Electrics/TrailerWiringDiagrams.aspx)

suggests

Pin 1 - Yellow - Left-hand turn indicator
Pin 2 - Black - Reversing signal
Pin 3 - White - Earth return
Pin 4 - Green - Right-hand turn indicator
Pin 5 - Blue - Service brakes
Pin 6 - Red - Stop lamps
Pin 7 - Brown - Rear lamps, clearance and side marker lamps

But pin 5 seems to go back through the plug into the vehicle. Could there be a plug up at the drivers position to wire in the brake controller?

Advice appreciated.

Thanks

Geoff

Sorry Geoff, cant help specifically with which wire goes where.
For me I used a loom from my old D2. This allows you to just plug it in, and its done, as the plug comes "pre-wired", so no guess work.
Maybe if you have no joy here, you could go to a Auto Eleccy and he will wire the plug for you, or give you the colour codes for it. You can get it off the net too. I've found it before, but I'm not sure how I found it.
As for breaking into the cars main loom, if you cant find the colours to do it, if you get a test light, you can check them all and work it out. May take a while, and you'll need someone to push pedals etc, but it'll work.

You need to run the wiring for the brake controller, there is no plug and play like there is for the lights. There is a part number for the loom and plug and I got mine from the UK but you need to run a supply, earth, brake wire and sense to the brake controller. There areva few threads on here.

I have the genuine LR wiring loom including the large 7-pin plug which is mounted in the fake PTO opening in the rear cross member. My LR dealer installed my Redarc brake controller and it must be wired into the vehicle's loom because the trailer socket loom is plugged straight in and everything works fine.

There's some information in this thread on my wiring Another 130 Build thread (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-and-tutorials/231870-another-130-build-thread.html)

Unfortunately photobucket ate the pictures and I deleted the account.

The Trailer brake wiring runs from the socket at the rear, blue for brake power, red sense from the brake light circuit. I used the grommet on the passengers side to run the wiring into the cab.

131382

131383

Part number for the factory loom is LR005920

On this picture you can see that the blue brake line is not integrated with the rest of the loom and needs to be separately connected 131384

You need to ensure that the blue wire is of sufficient diameter to not have a voltage drop at the rear of the car.
