Transfer case leak

Hi, a bit of advice if I may. 2002 D2 td5 auto. Last service - abt 4000 km ago, mechanic pointed out a leak from the transfer case. Said he would check it again next service. Said to "keep an eye on it" How the hell do I do that?

Is this a potentially serious issue or what?

Make sure it's not leaving a huge puddle under it every time you park. A 10c coin overnight would be max. I had this for a year or so.

To check the level, undo the filling point (you need a 1/2 socket square head) and some locktite to do it up again. Undo it, stick your little pinkie in and curl it down to make sure there's oil in it. If not, buy a oil pump with a flexi tube and pump in until it overflows. Make sure you have the right spec oil

I just stopped my leaking on the weekend. I had oil Seeping threw the threads of the bolts securing the plate.

Coated the bolts with thread sealant and new gasket sealant on plate. So far so good....

Do you mind me asking which plate? The one on the side or the angled one on the bottom of the case. I'm not sure the one on the side can be removed as the top bolts look like they will foul on the case body when undone?... Just asking, Thanks.

Sorry my last reply was terrible as I was using my phone.

The bottom access plate was coated everywhere and I couldn't work out where it was leaking from.

Once I had the plate off and cleaned everything up, the culprit was spotted being the bottom three bolt holes....oil was still dripping.

Before being fixed I had a 10 cent puddle every night.

My TC leaks (both 300tdi Defender & TD5 D2) looked like they were coming from the bottom bolts of the cover plate, but were in fact seeping down from the input shaft seal.
