No car is perfect!
All cars are a compromise & we buy the car with which we have to compromise the least.
I have a D3, I love it, but - I wish there was a bit more room in the rear with all the seats up, I wish it did 100kph in off road height (yes, I can buy LAMS), I wish the door arm rests were higher, I wish I could tilt the front of the drivers seat up, I wish the head rests were slightly further back & if I asked SWMBO she would come up with a few other things she would like to change/redesign.
So, if you were to design your own 4WD/car (money only a minor object) what would you do? What would you have to have? What could you do without? What would you make better?
1 thing I have always thought would be possible, cool & not a lot of extra money would be to build snorkels into the A pillars during manufacture. Save retro fitting, not create a blind spot, not spoil the look of the car.
One of my must haves would be a LR badge.

My Discovery, with everything on my list checked off.
Go pretty much wherever I wanted to go, capable off-road, comfortable, economical yet powerful, well behaved on road, self sufficient, 100% awesome.
SWMBO in the co-pilots chair, thousands of isolated km of adventure in front, full tank of fuel and some good tunes.

Take a D4 with TDV6 and stretch it to 110/120 inches, fit a defender shell over the D4 interior, lose about 500 odd kg and i think it would be pretty close.

My Freelander 2 if it had air suspension and locking diffs. It's an awesome car on road, a real pleasure to drive, and has been everywhere that my Jeep has been off road. It surprises me everytime I try a new track and I am used to people scratching their heads and asking how did you get that up here? With a lack of clearance it cops a hiding and I feel sorry for it, so air suspension would help. No low range means the traction control spins a bit high before kicking in so electronically locked diffs would be great. On the subject of no low range, that car doesn't need it with the auto tranny, terrain response, powerful motor and light weight. It would be my perfect car for sure.

Have always thought the same about the snorkel. Would also like an inbuilt discrete roll bar, a 1 litre diesel donk that powers 4 generators to juice up 4 independent direct drive electric motors = no gearbox, no diffs, prop shafts, axles = reduced weight. Great torque, top end speed, acceleration and very cheap to run. Suspension travel could also be extended easily. Also something that doesn't leak - that really p%&&#@ me off. A car from the land of perpetual rain and it leaks :(

A 2013 Defender with either a 3.2 transit , or TDV6 diesel engine. Snorkel , aftermarket radiator[ Serk?] Intercooler[ Serk again?] chipped, but not too much, no lift, 245/70 tyres, under body protection, a bull bar, winch, triple battery set up, solar panels, fridge, freezer, Mulgo bed set up, Mulgo sill fuel tanks, glove box, enlarged cubby box to hold the ECU & electronics. Riijidij rear bar, with swing out wheel carrier, & two containers, but instead of fuel, one for a water container with tap & hand cleaner, & one closed in for recovery gear. Some type of water container for the back. That will do for know.... oh an ex Army light trailer to carry anything else I think of. Only a lotto win away...:D :( :p Bob
