Bomb proof way to refill P38 coolant

I have created this PDF which illustrates a stress free method of refilling the coolant on a P38. I have attached this PDF.

I have used this method three times now after various engine maintenance jobs including removing the engine for overhaul. With this method the engine comes up to temperature and stabilises immediatley -without any airlocks.
Previously I had tried putting the car on a slight uphill slope, but that created an airlock. You might see why by looking at the pictures.

In my previous P38 the dealer left the lid off the overflow bottle during warmup and coolant went all through the fusebox - I don't let them near it anymore.

Hope this helps. - and don't skimp on the 50-50 ratio.

Thanks for that, some good advice there. I have always followed the procedure in RAVE and had success.

Initially i Jacked the front left up to make sure the reservoir was at the highest point, but the last time I didn't even do that.

I don't about you guys/gals, but I've never had issues with water overflowing. I generally only fill the reservoir about half way to allow for the air to bubble out and wait a while then standing ready with a jug of 50/50 and gradually top it up as the air escapes and presto!!!!...

I agree with redandy. I've never had an issue following the RAVE procedure.

Pulling the tank is the std procedure in RAVE for the D2. The P38 should be too much different.

Lifting the tank makes complete (& common) sense. Water (and most fluids) always find their own level.

FWIW, my rain water tank has the old fashioned bushies level of a bit of clear hose strapped to the side of it (thanks old mate).

100% reliable, 100% of the time.
