Standard Box trailer on sand

OK, so with an upcoming trip planned i was wondering how standard box trailers go on the beach? my towing vehicle of choice will of course be a Land rover: D2 1999 manual TD5.

The trip is from brisbane up to double island point (Teerwah beach) which is about 1 and a half hours drive. It will mostly be low tide driving, except for the entry on and off the beach. We were looking at taking a standard box trailer for a bit more extra gear, not really heavy stuff, just tents, bedding etc. all the gear that takes up the room! and keeping the heavy stuff in the car (esky etc.). The advice I'm after is firstly, has anyone done this particular trip/type of trip before?

secondly, any advice? have done loads of beach driving in the D2, and conquered many beach driving conditions.... but the catch is i have never towed anything before!

We've done this trip with an off-road camper trailer but never a standard box trailer. It should cope OK as most beach driving is smoother than typical Brisbane roads but check the suspension and axle carefully before you go as bouncing through a washout could break something if its already badly corroded. A good session with grease and lanolin spray before you set off will help protect car and trailer from salt and sand, there's a good car and trailer power wash on the way back to the ferry from Teewah (just before the shop), well worth it I think.

Treg hitches are better off road as the trailer can't cause the car to roll but a standard ball hitch should be OK for this trip, also, if you have any larger tyres for your trailer then fit them for the trip and run low pressure on all tyres on the sand, we run about 16psi on the car and 14psi on the trailer.

I'd also recommend having a good recovery kit with max tracks and a front winch on the car would be ideal, especially with a sand anchor.


We didn't rate Teewah too highly as a destination though, easy and cheap access makes it a magnet for hoons and bogans tearing up and down the beach in their defect monsters with oversize tyres, unstable lifts and no exhaust systems. hope you find a good spot though.
