My 200tdi disco needs a new muffler, a previous owner has removed the rear resonator and only the central muffler (which sounds stuffed) remains, it is quite noisy at the moment, not unbearable in the cabin, but from behind it is a bit antisocial, and I need to pass a roadworthy soonish.

In your experience, what would you do?
1) Just replace the central muffler?
or
2) Replace the muffler and have a resonator put in the rear section
or
3) Have a straight pipe welded in place of the central muffler and have a resonator installed in the rear section

Have at it!

I have read previously on this forum about some folk who have removed the Tdi main central muffler and just retained the rear smaller resonator or whatever it is, that supposedly did not make the vehicle's exhaust too noisy and perhaps gave a free flow to the exhaust gas.
The turbocharger it seems reduces the exhaust noise, by what means I don't understand but I have a mate with a Range Rover turbo diesel and it only has a small "hot dog" type resonator in the middle of the exhaust system, it is not really loud, although it has a bit of a whistle to it when the revs are up.
My 300 Tdi still has all the original exhaust that is all dated 1997 and still looks in perfect order, but if I had a failure I would try just replacing the damaged muffler with a pipe and running with the muffler that was left, not too sure how that would set with roadworthy inspection, but up here we don't have an annual check, you only need one to sell a vehicle on.
