View Full Version : Long Range Fuel Tank

I am looking at putting in a long range tank into my 95 Disco. It's the sort that fits in behind the rhs rear wheel arch. Seller claims it is 50l, but I'm not real convinced about that.

Just looking for others experience in fitting these tanks. I am not sure what brand it is. It comes with no fittings.

Want to know about mounting points, filler set up and how it feeds into the main tank, as I would be fitting it myself.

Any photos of your setup would be very helpful.

If its anything like the LPG conversion tanks for that capacity it will be L shaped and go around behind the tyre, and the filler pipe will tee into the top. You remove the metal upper section of the mudflap to do up the hose clamps. A new bolted in plate may be needed to protect the tank and fittings after installation.

I've seen one in conjunction with a long range main tank but didn't get to study the plumbing, except to see that they were linked under the chassis. They usually mount through the floor, not too hard to fit up. Draining it into your existing tank may be just a case of fitting a Facet style pump to it.

I've heard there is a 45 litre tank that fits into the rear of D1s between the filler and the main tank and gravity feeds. Is that the one you mean?
Suggest you try a LR specialist such as British Off-Road or MR Automotive who should know.

Might be the 45l one. I have to pop into MR sometime for a power steering hose so might pick their brains about it. I would prefer to have it set up as a storage tank with an electric pump to the main tank like I had in a landcruiser years ago.

IF its a Long Ranger tank, it will be a 45 litre tank designed to work in conjunction with their 120 litre tank. I have both, but got the bare 45 litre tank first from a friend to see if I could use it with the standard tank - I found you cannot use it in a conventional way. The 45 litre tank feeds the 120 litre tank via a balance pipe between the two, and the fuel is pumped from 120 litre - also allows the level sender to register the quantity in the tanks. The 45 litre is filled from a T which fits between the 120 litre and filler neck, also designed specifically to fit between the two tanks. The fit kit from Long Ranger is over $100.

If it is a Long Ranger tank, and unless you want to experiment with fitting it using different ways for which it is designed, it might be a waste of money buying it. Might only work with a lot ingenuity and experimentation with set up.

If it is the type that is used to replace the main tank when gas bottles are used, it will have a special filler neck to be used instead of the stock one, also will have a big hole in the top so the sender unit will fit. It will definitely tricky to use (or at least fill) this with a stock tank in place.
