8) wow ,took the beast out for a run today(dont tell mr plod!)went like a dream , got home checked under hood ,turned motor off, then fuel starts dribbling out from carby!!!!What I would like to know ,is there any other carby's that can replace the original solex on the series 2 2.25 4cyl motor , that would be as reliable /more economical?
would like to hear from anyone that has done a conversion of this type, otherwise it looks like a carby overhaul!!

hi, fernockulated
Rocket here, got problams with the old solex on the 61 these carbies were fitted up until 66-67 then went to the zenith 36 iv type they were not a great improvement but a little bit more frugal, the common conversion is the early Holden carb, the Stromberg BXOV1 from the FB-EK-EJ-EH-HD-HR but you have to do slight mods to throttle linkages, also these feed a larger motor, so you have change the main jet, a 49 or 50 main jet is good as it is close to the 48-215 ,FJ specs of a132ci motor if you want to rebuild your original carb a good carb specialist is the way to go, but be careful there are a lot of shonks out there
I had the carb on my 68 2a ex army 109 done by a guy up here and it has lasted 4years with out much trouble (starting to show wear it the throttle shaft ) but I drive it daily He is up at Caboolture and runs a company called DUEL FUEL he is bloody brilliant  8O style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif ask Incisor but any of the older design carbies don't take kindly to ULP it isn't kind to rubber O rings or Diaphrams

G'day rocket
thanks for the info, does the zenith bolt straight on to the same manifold as the solex or are they a different stud pattern, and are the linkages the same, and caboolture is a three hour drive for me,I'm half way between Warwick and Ipswich!! thanks anyway

A while back i had a '69 IIa and replaced carby with a Stomberg straight off a HT red motor 6. It bolted straight onto the manifold and the linkages all lined up. Fuel line was the only mod I needed. Hacksaw on the steel line and some rubber hose. The main jet needed to ne changed down from original. Rare Spares (assume there will be a branch in QLD) sell a variable main jet that can be adjusted externally by scewing in for less and out for more. That setup was on for over 100,000 miles and performed brilliantly. Best part was, off road could screw out for more power and on road screwed in for better economy (avereged genuine 26-28mpg on highway!!), only needed 1/4 turns to make the difference. Carby cost $10, rebuild kit was $15 and variable jet was $22. Probably dearer today, that was 10 years ago, but even at todays prices this would have to be cheaper in the long run than overhauling original. Hope this helps decide which way to go.

Hi ferno
Yes I know Boonah, took the 2a down there in August, I have a friend down there he owns the 2a Ambulance "Norma-Jean" took some rims and tyres down to him he works in the camping shop, the Zenith 36iv sits 90 degrees different to the Solex so get the adaptor, take everything from the manifold up, Or you could go the way of JF 1056 and use a stromberg with a 49-50 main jet or an adjustable main jet.
it's about a $60 fuel run from here to boonah in a 2a troop transport with a load of 5 wheels on.

8) thanks rocket & jf1056, will take that info onboard and have a think over my options (hmmmmm, there is that mettallic clunking sound again!)
if it takes $60 from caboolture to boonah, will have to win lotto to take the beast to Fraser, or hitch a ride on a semi!!

Hi Ferno
that was a return trip, wound up trying to keep up with the traffic at a whole 95 ks but the old girl has a sick valve, something to do with 134,000 mls on unleaded without hardened valve seats, could well induce poor fuel consumption

 Phew!! thats a bit more acceptable, i knew they have a reputation for being thirsty, but that was a bit of a shock!unfortunatly ,you didn't mention that they were round trip figures!Fraser don't look so impossible now ! 8)

Some good info there Ferno, and i've saved it for my own pesonal records (thinking fuel economy would be nice as still doing about 230k to a 70L tank). And just so you don't forget, got about 5 weeks to get it sorted for Nth Straddy, pity you've got such a long trip to get there though, and Fraser would be a lot worse style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

 If time and $ permit ,Straddie would have to be done in the "Toyosan Hivarra" landy wannabe, as the beast is not yet legal,(dont tell Mr. Plod ,advantage of living in the bush!)However , a customer of mine at present is driving around his farm in a series 2a lwb with a safari top, red motor , and has the original 4cyl motor out of a series 3 shorty ute (was that Incisor's ears I heard pricking?)complete with a zenith carby, so am currently in delicate negotiations with him regarding $, hopefully not tooo much, keep pushing for Staddie 8)
