Hi all,

Acquired a series 2a yesterday and I'm trying to find the vin.

VicRoads vin requirement:

"Letters and Numbers only. Must be 17 characters in length. Cannot include I, O or Q. Must contain at least 1 alpha and 1 numeric character."
I can find a 9 character chassis number (8 digits followed by a G).
I can find a 4 character body number althought I can't tell if the first character is an F, or if it is an I or 1 with some scratches.
I can find a 7 digit body serial number.
Some old VicRoads paperwork shows a barely readable 'vin' which appears the same as the chassis except the last letter appears to be an S.

CalVIN shows the model as

Model: Land Rover, Series IIA

Body type: Station wagon

Wheel base: 109in

Engine: 6-cylinder

Model years: 1966-1971

Destination: Completely knocked down (CKD), right-hand drive (RHD)

GDesign: Six significant design modificationsSuffix used from April 1969 till October 1971

or

SDesign: Significantly modified, no further details known
As none of the numbers are 17 characters long, and combinations don't add up to 17, I suspect VicRoads introduced a 17 character vin at some later stage. Does anyone know when? Does the series 2a pre-date the 17 character vin?

In this case, you use the chassis number instead of the VIN. The chassis number is effectively the VIN.

Vehicle identification number numbers, commenced in 1985, series IIa chassis number numbers pre-date the VIN requirement by at least 13 years or as much as 24 years.

The sequence for a SIIa chassis or "car" number on the ID plate (which should both be the same) have an 8 digit number and a single suffix letter (making 9).

Is that O.K., O.K.? :D

OK, I need to get a new slave cylinder, my newly vehicle is a 1964 series IIa 109 table back ute, (Rover six originally) apparently I need the VIN or chassis No to get the correct one as the thread can be different depending of model.

I found the vehicle number 34700797A, there's not a lot of rust and the chassis looks good too with no visible repairs, so where is it if it has one.

Have a look on the left hand rear spring hanger. This is the spot for the CKD versions. Looks like this ( my 71 workshop)

Brake or clutch slave ?
Did the supplier say which thread ? Late in Series III they went to metric brake fittings.

For vehicles and especially Landrovers that age the chassis number is never a reliable way of knowing what is installed. If original, it will be UNF thread, as were all Series 2a. Since it is a bit of a pain to replace the hose and its fitting, it is almost certain to be this, especially since the clutch slave is different to the Series 3 which went metric late in production.
