Gday All,
Searched some threads about mounting roofrails but and interested in if anyone has a awning mounted without using a roofrack or roof basket.
I already have an ARB awning from my D2, and looking on the various sites, and threads I have read, the crossbar system only has 2 bars and they all seem to be mounted from the drivers seat back, and my awning I think will need some support at the front of the car.
Any pics or ideas on what anyone has used or even failed with would be great. I will need to buy everything other than the awning, so am really starting from scratch.
Thanks in advance
Cheers Ean

I have an awning made from a tarp. It is rolls up and held by occy straps.
I used aluminium tube to hold it and it extends beyond the bars.
You could use some aluminium angle and attach it to that and bolt it through the bars.

Is it possible with the roof rails to have a bar at the front, say above where the driver sits, the only bars I have seen are on the rear section of the car.

Rhino do a small rail and bar for the front above the front seats.
Otherwise it is LR extended rails for more $s.
I am assuming yours is without any rails?

You are correct, the car has nothing on it at the moment. I take it when you purchase these they fit into the tracks under the plastic strips on the roof ?
I see you can get Rhino, Aero, Thule, or atleast they advertise them to fit the D3.

There are no "tracks" (or rails) under the plastic strip. You need to buy them separately, unless you use a fitting that bolts into the fixed boltholes (meant for the rails), in which case you can't position the bars to your liking.

Ean,
best bet is a Rhino track set, and do a track at front and rear.
Get higher legs at the front, and shorter at the rear.
With the heavy duty bar, your awning will fit straight on.
We've done heaps of these on d3/d4s.

With Rhino, you do need to put a pop rivet that is hidden at the rear of the rails on the raised section.
Easy to do.
I didn't fit rails to lower roof section, the foxing is fine just using the raised roof section, two HD bars, rhino track each side.
You may also have to use a pop rivet in the lower roof area as well i think.
The rhino instructions are good, making the job easy.

Check out the Slimline Frontrunner. I have just fitted one to my D4. It bolts direct into the roofchannel, fits low, and has a neat bracket available ( which I also use ) to mount the awning . The cross rails can be mounted at spacing of your choice, or like the front end of mine, you can add rails to effectively give yourself a solid floor. If you want to change the configuration, or even the length to a point, the entire platform is modular, and can be altered to suit. There are pics under the thread 'Frontrunner slimline2'

Yep Pedro, that be the one. Don't think the chances of a D3 pic the same are very high.
