View Full Version : How do you intend using your 110 or Perentie?

G'day all those lucky people who have bought a 110 or sixby at auction, or, like me, are planning to do so.
How do you intend using your acquisition? I know there are collectors looking for something special, ex-army folks looking to acquire their old steed, farmers needing a robust farm hack, travellers wanting a campervan base, a hire company renting them out for outback trips...

Could you please list your variant (GS/FFR/RFSV/Ambo etc and a description of intended use?

if i manage to pick one up 'hard top' than it will be de-militerise and setup up for a trip to africa......don't think it would be wise driving around africa in a camo 110

I'm aiming to nab a GS.

Handy for carting stuff around the property, maybe a landy event here and there, but mainly for chucking a swag and an esky in the back and going bush for a few days at a time.

I bought myself a rag top FFR with winch. Basically setting it up to do 4wd trips and haul my dirt bikes around with a fridge full of cold beer and food

Not much setup required really, add a compressor ,usb charging ports and a fridge. Good to go!

When I can scrape together enough money i'll be sitting next to it and staring for a few months, then I'll take the roof off and drive around like I'm king of the road... then I'm going camping at Straddie.

This one- just getting it ready for the next owner. Reminiscing every time I turn the key :)
The next one?
Minor mods-
Tacho
Hope to get it plated as a 5 seater, then I can drive it everyday.
Will put the split rims into storage, out for the big trips.
Playing with cab/ full length hard top ideas, but will probably go with a bikini top.
Considering swapping the ffr tail for a GS tailgate, will need to add a RHS bracket.
Getting off-track as much as possible.

How's everyone's experiences of owning a 110/Perentie for a while now?

There's been enough on ebay to think that either people are trying to cash in on a private sale, or they didn't quite meet ownership expectations. There's also been a decent number of military specific parts sold off by vehicle owners. I'm hoping to get some views from those selling due to failed expectations, as well as from happy owners.

So, is living with your Landy, living up to your expectations?

What mods have you found to be critical from a user point of view? i.e. creature comforts (stereo, seats etc) and utility mods (PAS, storage boxes, cargo barrier, higher visibility/non-military paint etc)

Im having fun with it 10,000ks in around 10 months of ownership.
Haven't really done much in the way of mods other than adding a compressor

An axle let go on the beach recently, Sourced proper replacement and it was nothing like what came out.. Original CV wouldn't even fit on replacement army axle

biggest ongoing concern has been the fuel tank when i picked it up it was leaking. I pulled it all down brazed lead wiped and redkote on the inside. Fixed!

Until i slammed it on the trails again :mad:

Whenever the key gets turned it guarantees an adventure. Last weekend was a good drive with the roof off up a fun trail in the dark with the rain!!:D

Like you I deduce that with the number on the market, there must have been a lot purchased for short term resale. I have inspected and bid - but alas I am yet to win.... either my price expectations have to change - or the market needs to be saturated and fall! I hope the guy that paid $18k+ for the refurbished GS in Sydney last sale enjoys his machine!
Anyway - I WILL own one....It will get power steering, it will probably get some paint and some signwriting and it will become the daily work vehicle for our cattle stud.

To discuss more military specific uses and fittings on your Perentie, you will find more info on the REMLR Forum. There is a section there on Radios, which features both historic original fitments, and also current users.

Registry of Ex Military Land Rovers - Index (http://remlr.com/forum/index.php)

REMLR will also be a good source of support in you maintaining the originality of your Perentie.

I'm going guns on the next auction. I'm after a GS leaving it as is, I will put a lockable battery isolator in, maybe put some draws and bed in the back and I will be able to leave all my fishing and camping gear in there so I can go and explore all the nooks of my home state at the drop of a hat. I want to set it up so it looks as is but a real user friendly weekend explorer.

Hopefully will be getting a GS from Brisbane. Ship it up to CQLD and do a couple of comfort mods - UHF, Stereo, Spotties and maybe fridge outlet. Then use it as a bush/hunting wagon on my days off, and also maybe a drive or two to work...:D

These two cover me.

I can't think of a single thing I'd do to change mine. Just driving around in a GS is great; no stereo, no power steering, no A/C, no power windows - or even winding windows! Simplicity. Bliss.

Congrats Mate.
Welcome to the Perentie club!

You could do worse than join REMLR.com. Register of Ex Military Land Rovers.
We are a friendly bunch as well and there is a large amount of info about the Perenties.
REMLR.com is just like AULRO for ex-mil stuff.

Thanks Dave. Yeah joined up on REMLR as well. Best thing is the better half was the one who suggested we get a dedicated off-road/hunting wagon. When this 110 came up I couldn't pass on the opportunity.
It's just going to be a bit strange driving one as a civvie this time around.

I'll be looking at getting a GS and setting it up as a solo play/camping/tough touring/off-road explorer. Might even drive it to work occasionally just for cool value :cool:

Will start with decent tyres, dual battery, spotties, sound deadening and maybe a stereo (depending on how much success I have with the sound deadening)

Longer term:
- power steering;
- will see how the suspension holds up, but probably new shocks, maybe 2" lift;
- some rock sliders and maybe new bull-bar (depending on what comes on the one I find);
- Diff locks will find their way underneath eventually and probably a turbo strapped to the engine;
- would be good to get the spare out from underneath but might not be worth the effort?

Cheers, and good luck getting one.
Bodge.

We have an FFR perentie. It is a 1990 with 55,000km which is genuine according to the log book. We have owned it for about 4 weeks and love it, having done about 1500km in that time. It isn't good on the freeway in rush hour although other vehicles do seem to give us plenty of room. Maybe they realise that their car will scratch more easily than ours!. We are getting a steel roof rack custom made to hold a roof top tent and are planning a three month trip to Cape York next year. We are planning some off road practice days over the next few months. I have owned 4wds for 25 years but am new to Land Rovers of this era.
We are trying to spend as little money as possible for our adventure camping trip and don't need a turbo, power steering, a radio or aircon.
The LR didn't have a spare wheel but I have bought 2x 2nd hand defender rims and re spayed them to match the military spec. I was able to get 2 decent Olympic Steel trek spare tyres from Wrights tractor wreckers in Mclaren Vale SA so all 6 wheels and tyres match.
I have fitted a small Primus car fridge between the two front seats which doubles as an arm rest and will have the old trusted Engel in the back.
In the future we may look at diff locks and /or a winch but we will wait and see if they are needed.
Hopefully I will still love through an Adelaide winter.

My ship is going to take me to Uganda and back! But it'll get Plasti-dipped to temporarily cover the cam paint...
I love it! I have finally reached driving nirvana.

At long last I have rejoined the family of Land Rover owners. I now have a Truck, Carryall, Lightweight, Personnel Carrier parked on the driveway, gently dripping oil in only the way a Land Rover can!

A mate of mine drove her straight up to Brisbane from the Melbourne auction without any significant issues. Minor things like one windscreen wiper falling off just don't count.
She has a definite ooze of oil coming from the rear seal of the transfer case, so that will probably be the first item for attention.

As to use, she will be put to work for everything from carting materials for renovation projects, carting the kids on holiday, performing duty as an official vehicle on the Variety Bash... and so on. This will entail a few additions like radios, roof rack, and lights. Even SWMBO is happy - this particular Carryall has aircon fitted :D

log book km "no rebuild!!" but now greys are having a massive auction that ends tomorrow, so many on there that the bids are still sitting at 2-4 grand, bit annoyed mine wasn't that cheep but $9455.09 for a 4x4 with only 30000km on it from 1988 is still a good purchase. can't wait to get the turbo put on so i can take off faster than a bus

Gi Bo, don't stress mate. Smidge under 10K is good money for very low ks.
The last 30Seconds are what counts with the auctions. You will see a BIG surge in the last thirt minutes.

I picked up a GS a few weeks ago with the intention of using it to go camping and by extension fishing, metal detecting and gold panning. It will make the job of getting on site to some of the places I like to go alot easier. That being said I also drive it around town on odd jobs, it's a lot of fun :D

Just picked up a 1988 GS with 4570 kms on the clock though I'm sure this is post re-build since the body's been around the traps and has a few issues to deal with. It has a re-galvanised chassis, full engine rebuild, new gearbox and transfer case, new front end, exhaust system and wiring harness and new Michelins all round plus lots of other replaced bits and pieces. Judging by the dates on various things this took place in mid 2009.

I couldn't be more pleased and will be heading off for a couple of weeks off- road camping in a few weeks to try it out.

My main problem is that the Central Diff Lock light is not working and I am not sure if its engaging or not when I pull out the knob - presumably I can jack up a couple of wheels and try rotating them?

Can't wait to try it out - the last time I owned a Landrover was a Series 2a in 1969 so I'm a bit rusty!

These vehicles are 25 years old. Electrical connections corrode. However they will probably do better than modern vehicles.

110 cargo, with winch, only one in Sydney, March auction. Defeated late challenge from two other bidders, one from Kincumber (might have been Trraca, but at least he got one too )(seems to be a gentleman of about my vintage) How will I use it? - Daily driver, sides rolled up, silly grin :D, go some places others can't--still with silly grin, but now even wider :D :D. Pretty much says it all. Wish List :- power steering, Turbo, Intercooler, Diff locks, all pretty much non-urgent.More urgent - Snorkel (don't wish to reprise the demise of the uninsured Triton, which I dropped off the dam wall, on the wet side, with the engine running)and some bulb holders for the dash lights, specifically the ones that clip into the back of the speedo.

Hi Bad Co
Our Primus fridge is mounted on two pieces of marine ply. The bottom one is screwed to the floor and and to the panel behind. This can be unscrewed for servicing. The top piece is fixed to the fridge with a ratchet strap and then the two pieces are bolted together. I have a Thumper battery in the storage box behind and this powers all the auxiliary items.
