Love the song about Broome. I have fond memories of Broome in the 80's, whilst serving on a patrol boat from Darwin. The wharf is some distance from town, & the tide ebbs & flows about 7 metres or so. You have to tend to the lines & springs fairly well. There are two [ I think] old pearling luggers in a park, in Broome, and when we had a skinful, the go was for two fellas to have a race, jump the fence, up the ramp alongside the lugger, climb the rigging, first to touch the top of the mast was the winner. The local coppers were decent, they watched us, & when we finished having our fun, offered to take us back to the wharf in the back of the paddy wagon. 8 or 9 drunken sailors in the back of the wagon, only this time they let us out ! Our Skipper at the time was a Fleet Air Arm pilot, getting his sea time up in command in order to get a promotion. He flew Trackers , based on an airfield near Broome, for coastal surveillance, for a few years. He told us when they pulled the Trackers out , he flew the last one on patrol, & did a touch & go in the main street of Broome , as a farewell. I love that part of the World, probably changed now though. This could probably be seen as rude, but of the two aircraft in use at the time, the Tracker had two engines driving propellers, the Skyhawk had a jet engine, the joke at the time was two screws beats a blow job anytime.

I will include this , as there is a reasonable chance I may be on the plane guard, the destroyer in the background. Funny thing, we did a stint of plane guard with the big USN carriers in the gulf of Tonkin, during the Vietnam War, when they were bombing the North. Thing is, even with four boilers burning, we found it difficult to keep up with those big Carriers , when they were flat out. Bob

When I'm tasting Bundaberg's finest, I get a bit teary listening to this. Could be something to do with the Flying Doctor saving Mums life when she had complications , out West, back in the day. Bob

It seems comforting to now the more things change, the more they stay the same. Bob

Isn't it great to know we still live in a country where people can dream, & the dreams get there, even though it can still be tough, making it happen. Let's hope it keeps happening, Bob
