On the subject of thermostats my TD5 runs at 82

I recently drove to Brisbane in temps up to 34C and my 2002 D2 TD5 usually ran at around 82C and never exceeded 92C on a long climb.

I have checked my digital gauge against Nanocom and they are within 0.5C and the sensor is next to the OEM sensor.

What do other TD5s run at normally ? I know mine takes a long time to warm up so I wonder if the thermostat is not closing fully.

I am pretty sure all of the cooling sytem is original .

I must say I like the thing running nice and cool and would be disappointed if I fitted a new standard thermostat and it ran at 88C and above. So what is the part number of the cooler thermostat but with standard spring ?

I love the lack of heat soak when I shut down also compared to the RRC V8 which would gain 5C or more.

My Td5 stays around the 88-89°C mark as indicated by my sensor on the head,so coolant temp should be about the same.

PEM101020 is the 82°C stat with the heavy bypass spring.

x2. Arent TD5s designed to run warmish and running too cool might accelerate wear, is is that an old wives tale?

Nanocom says 88-90 for me. Sometimes 92 up hill or hot days. Very consistent though.

PEM100990 - Cream is 88° With hard Spring (Designed for Diesel and V8 applications)

PEM101020 - Black or Cream is 82° With Hard Spring (Designed for a V8 and used as a stopgap with K4 engines)

PEL500110 - Grey is 82° With Light Spring (K4 engines)

The 101020 will keep you running cool but may creep up at idle. The PEL unit will stay cool at idle. Mine (V8 admittedly) will sit on 87.7 all day in traffic, on the freeway will drop to 84.5. The hard springs stop the bypass required for keeping things cool at idle.

The 100990 should be the original TD5 T/stat.

My td5 sits on 86-87 most times, that's using the madman setup. :)
