View Full Version : P38 w/front end damage

Since owning the classic after my last P38, I have been keeping my eyes peeled on Gumtree etc for the P38 to come back for sale. Last week it came back on, but the guy was asking 3k more than I sold it to him for 2yrs ago.
I contacted him about the car and asked how it had treated him etc, told him I kind of missed the car and asked if he was neg on price - nope!

So this got me thinking again. Then I ended up buying a 2001 P38 at what I feel was the right price considering the damage.

The good and bad:

+ Well maintained, new battery, newish tyres
+ Interior in good nick bar the usual roof lining and a peeling glove box
+ Reasonable/low kms for age (18X XXX)
+ Sound system still works well

- The obvious panel damage
- Has been converted to coils (Bilstein struts), however compressor and valve block are still present
- Small glitch/damage in the air con display

I have already started getting quotes for the repair. First one was $3k, providing I supplied parts; however my family has a few contacts who may be able to do it for a better price.

Once panel is sorted I will be putting this one on gas (sequential injection) as I intended to do with my previous P38.

Will also be putting this one back on air suspension.

All said and done, I'm hoping to have this one all fixed and on gas for less than I sold my last one for.

Ouch! I'm guessing it was a repairable write-off!

If you can get it all fixed up including that cooler line that looks damaged for 3k, then you've got a bargain and I commend you for keeping another P38 alive!

Keep us posted!

I think I saw that one advertised in my search. I like the colour.
There are a few P38's on eBay for sale with issues going cheap. I have the links I think.
Good luck and keep us posted on its progress. :)

I saw that one for sale, $11,000. They were dreaming. Add up the bits, wing, bumper, bonnet, lamps, inner wing, paint etc etc. Plus no EAS. I offered $1100 but strangely no response. Hope you got it for a good price, looks like a worthwhile proposition

My cousin has a p38 wreck with most of the front end available... Unfortunately he sold the bumper a few months back!

Gentlemen,
By all means help one another,,
but no buying/selling in the Forum,, ok?
I've heard PM's are good for that sort of thing,,;)

This p38 rides terribly.

Whoever thought converting from air suspension was a good idea, is a moron.

Also found some quality workmanship from whoever did the conversion:

Family friend has quoted aforementioned better price...
Car is booked in for the 11th, gives me a couple of weeks to source the parts.

Also noticed that the blend motor has **** itself, and the temp sensor for the climate control may be on the fritz.

I'm hoping the air suspension only needs new airbags all round?

Looking at a 96 P38 wreck, the airbags only have 2 clips holding them in on the top also.
Maybe the workshop was not as lazy as we thought, but still....

Any recommendations for airbags to go into this? Either standard or up-rated arnotts or something? I will be doing my research soon enough.

Thanks to Gary for the front bumper. Looks like I am still chasing a grill.
I put the replacement bonnet on and it does not latch closed due to the damage to the bulk head front assy, I should have thought of that.
The older bonnet does not have a separate bolt hole for the grounding cable.

There's only one option for airbags. The arnott gen 3's are a significant improvement over the originals. Money well spent.

X 3 on the Arnott Gen III's, they made a huge improvement in the ride quality plus the added benefit of more suspension travel.

We do of course want to see pics of the finished product (front bar included ;)) and if you are taking it off the beaten track let me know, if the timing is OK I wouldn't mind joining you. Maybe even get a few of the p38's from around Perth for an outing?

$825 + shipping from USA... getting a quote now but that's pretty steep!

Lifetime warranty is pretty good though. Then its only the pump, lines and valve block that needs to be worried about.

Although 2nd gen airbags can be had for about a third of that price...

Decisions, decisions. Though possibly leaning towards gen 3 as I recall my old P38 handled like a bit of a boat

Steep it is. You could get standard bags and be a happy man, or you could get Gen III's and ride satisfied, know that you have a lifetime warranty and solid bags under your Rangie!

Needing help with the HEVAC. It clearly has a problem with the blend motors, as the airflow is not changing vents when manually operated.
Normally I would expect a checkbook symbol, however half the HEVAC is not illuminated and the temp digits on the drivers side are only half visible/half the digit is missing.

Is this a job that needs a new HEVAC display, or could I get away with replacing a few backlights?

edit - my LCD looks like this one. Hoping it is a simple fix like the silicone in this thread http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/7-range-rover-mark-ii-p38/20591-climate-control-fix-pictures.html

I would try replacing the globes first of all. You can buy a replacement set on eBay. But they are available locally if you take one in to burson or similar, they should be able to help. Recall I got mine from online bulb supplier. I'll see if I can dig out the specs.

Jeremy

You're going to have to take the control unit out regardless of whether it is fixable. Take it out, check the connectors ( or silicone strips as your link suggested) and if required change the lamps. If all else fails then get yourself another control unit.

Good luck with the project

Thanks 33chinacars, I've just checked on the Aus Govt site and no mention of including freight. I wish the same was true when I was importing boats from the USA. All calculations were done including shipping for import duty and every other tax and charge they could think of :(. For a while there, even with the additional charges it was still well worth it with what you could sell them for over here.

I have been enquiring about that car since it appeared. The lady owner is away and does not know to much about it. From what she has explained its a 4.0 Gems so early 99 at best. Car has overheated and been diagnosed with Slipped liner (s). She is getting back to me with more info once back in Perth.

On a slightly different note the Black / Red one rescued from the Freeway is now all running well, Re -conned Heads, Rad, Water pump etc and much time thanks to peterjam

Ok, the car is almost out of the panel shop.

Have some bits on order from Britcar.

Still looking for the following:
Front grille - AWR1617 ($85.36 plus postage from UK)
Air cleaner housing ESR2948 ($237.68 plus postage from UK)

Hoping to find them a bit cheaper than this, possibly locally, as the above prices are before postage. Also I can do without them for now, as my current broken bits will still fit, but long term I would like to have them replaced.

Would anyone have anything or suggest any places to try for a decent second hand part or something?

I've seen heaps of air filter boxes 2nd hand on ebay from breakers. Nothing special about the plastic box - providing you get the right one.

The grill sounds a good price. There's plenty of "blinged" up grills around if that's what you fancy. Once again, there are many 2nd hand one's - but they tend to have the bottom strip colour coded.

I tend to log on to ebay as a UK or USA user. It throws up lots more P38 options.

I have called Linn Rover about the parts, they will be getting back to me. Will see how they compare!

Got the P38 back on friday. Will pop some photos up when it comes out my garage next.
Replaced the ABS accumulator while it was parked outside the panel shop.
Such an easy job, makes a lot of difference in the braking department too. Lucky I did, because I got cut off twice on the way home.

She's got the early orange front indicators and I think the headlights don't match either, but I will replace them with later model offerings if the opportunity presents itself.

The suspension is still terrible, the springs in it are too high and too hard for my liking. Was thinking of putting gen2 air springs in cheaply(>$300) and make sure everything else in the system works before shelling out $1000+ for some gen3's. Thanks Wayne for the link. Not sure, but I may need new shocks too? The Bilstein ones in there might be to suit the heightened springs...I will need to investigate.
The dash needs to be pulled out to fix the HEVAC display, dash lighting and blend motors. Then the filter at the bottom of the windscreen needs to be replaced as it is broken and full of debris.
The steering wheel isn't centered, maybe as a result of the collision, but I need to get on top of that also.
Still need the grille and air cleaner box as Linn Rover did not have any.

Certainly have my work cut out for me, but if a 2001 P38 is worth up to $14-15k, I've only spent about half that so far to get to where I am :) That's what I'll keep telling the missus anyway! :p

Check Rave for centralising the steering wheel. There is a specific and easy way to do it. Good to hear the car is back on the road.

Pulled the car out today to investigate a couple of issues.

Initial diagnosis indicates that both the blend motors and distribution servo have had it. The fans are stuck on defrost, and even when I select 'HI' on the display, it still blows out icy cold air.
Looking at parts sources online, it looks like I am up for at least $312 for a new set of motors/servos, which I suppose isn't all that bad.

Also plaguing the car is a door/unlock unlock issue. The car sometimes seems to have a mind of it's own and goes nuts locking and unlocking itself. Have done a bit of reading, and it seems like the door actuators like to play up. I've gone to town on them with CRC/WD40, it seemed to stop the issue, will see how it pans out.

Looking closer at the suspension set up, it has King Spring KRFS-01 and Bilstein heavy duty series shocks B46-2214-H0
From the looks of things, both are standard fitment items, so I should be able to use the Bilsteins with standard air springs.

Haha yes it bugs me as well!

The orange lenses went on for free. I have a driver's side clear indicator - once I get a passenger side one, the ancient orange ones will come back off :p

I also put on an early model headlight. Now that they are on the car I can notice a bit of a difference between the headlights. Will fix that too, one day!

Buying new property and consolidating current mortgages, and the Mrs doesn't approve of me keeping so many cars. My ownership of this car has been short lived, and it will pain me to see it go...

There is a seller on e-bay selling the foam backed headlining material for $15 a mtr plus 14 to ship to WA. I will be doing mine very soon, cant be that hard. As for leather care just get into Bunnings and get any cheap leather conditioner. Get that done ASAP, I did mine the day after I picked the new car up and again a few days after. Clean the leather when needed with Dove triple moisturising body cream wash.
Good to hear you will possibly be keeping up with the project.

I've tried several different leather conditioners on our Mercedes, BMW's and more recently on our Jag and LR's. I prefer the Zymol leather care stuff or when I can get my hands on it, the Connolly Hide Care treatment. Goes on nice, absorbs well and the leather appears to love it.
