 no its not another double post in the subject, just wondering if any of the series owners can confirm my suspicion?
After checking for freeplay in the steering components and finding negligible movement I am still getting a "pregnant hippo" style of roll whilst cornering on curvy roads. It feels like the front diff wants to go in the opposite direction , so am wondering if the shackle bushes might be the problem, and if so how difficult are they to replace , as these are one of the few components of a vehicle I have never had to replace b4, eg; are they a press fit (needing a press to fit them) or do they just "fall out"
all advice appreciated

Hi Ferno
Pregnant Hippo I always refered to it as a Stoned Crow but it sounds like Bushes, that is providing the spring "U" bolts are tight and the diff is not moving (broken centre pin) OR the steering relay is not exessivly worn or the relay to track rod arm is loose(tighten clampbolt 11/16 unf i think) you can check the shackles by placing a tyre lever between spring and hanger and leavering hard for verticle movement, the standard steel/rubber/steel bushes are about $6 each from british off road 6 bushes are the same size, the 2 in the chassis (upper, rear of front spring is different size always replace the shackle pins when doing bushes, mine in the lwb ex army 2a have lasted 12years (150,000 mls) and are just starting to clunk going across driveways 8O NOTE SERIES 2's HAVE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF THREAD AS THE INNER SHACKLE PLATE IS THREADED THEN HELD BY THE NUT  the bushes are a press fit but can be removed/fitted with the correct drifts, there is a reasonable garage /workshop in church st if my memory is correct they should be able to press out/in at a fair price, speak to Paxton at Brit Off Rd. in regards to threads, you will have to supply the chassis No.

That sounds like the same clunk that I sometimes get from the front right whilst turning right or going over bumps, Devil Kin gets the same thing, so it is just worn brushes?
Does a fresh set of brushes make any difference to the ride of the vehicle?

Hey Ferno style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
You have got to forgive Pheonix he is from Tasmania you know and that place regularily gets left of maps so it has to have some effect,
yeah I have a little knowledge on series vehicles, was a spare parts man for Leyland Aust and was also warranty trained so i have a fair idea what to look for, DON'T FORGET TO SETTLE THE BUSHES (slow drive around the block/yard) BEFORE TIGHTENING THE SHACKLE PINS and NUTS did you check the relay lower arm? if they come off while driving the results can be from embarrasment to FATAL as you lose all steering.

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif G'day Rocket
yeah, I feel for phoenix being in Tassie and not having too many AULRO members other than his bro to socialise with!!! Anyway the prob with the bushes is not drastic(YET)but needs doing in the not too distant future,as still awaiting spare(?) funds to enable rego, asfor the rest of the steering bits and pieces, they all seem tight enough, maybe just a small amount of retightening of the wheel bearings mite take a little bit of "slop" out of the f/e,and removal of p/o retreads mite also make a difference, food for thought!Still it all takes lots of folding stuff that most of us don't seem to have enough of these days  thanks again

8) bitchie boys,
ferno bags phoenix re-bushes [brushes]
rocket bags phoenix 'cause he's from the apple isle 'that place regularily gets left of maps'
my turn to bag rocket's spelling - regularly and off
oh, and for my input on your bump steer problem ferno, i agree the spring hanger bushes are most likely stuffed, also check the spring clamps on the leaves, if the springs are loose on the axle and the leaf clamps part way along the spring are loose [ie worn, allowing the leaves to move sideways] then the axle will wander around causing the driver to work harder than necessary.
bump steer can also be aggravated by the axle not square/vertical/ whatever to the chassis, or sagged springs, wide wheels, oversize tyres
and on etc.

Geez, I take some holiday time away from AULRO, and I'm getting bagged for bad spelling and for being from the apple isle.
If I ever get my hands on you lot
But seriously folks, the clunk noise that I was talking about before, is that bushes?

have come to the contusion(too hard to spell conclusion, and didn't want to misspell it!)that it is definately the bushes, springs are not loose, neither are the u-bolts,rims are standard l/r running 750x16 (although they do have retreads on) so bushes are the likely culprit as it only does it on cornering! Once again I thank everyone for there input to this subject ,feel free to continue if you wish with any other techy tips in regard to this subject that mite be of assistance to anyone else in the same predicament  8)

8)ok, i'm sorry,
i lived in melb for 40+ years and closest i got to tassie was fi and ki
still wanna go there but now i'm much lotta far away further.
back to ferno and the beast wot steers itself
nobody mentioned shock absorbers'
yeah ferno i know its probably wot we all said bushes, but take it for a spin [no don't] without the shocks [its ok folks i know where ferno is, its safe] or try others on it
just a suggestion b4 you rip into it

I think if it was shockies ,it would be more like a body roll action, but this is definately a feel as if the axle wants to go in the opposite direction to that which you are steering, will have to try the tyre lever test this w/e if time permits(the better half comes home on sunday, so had better clean up a bit ,maybe )

i replaced the front shackles on my beastie today, didnt venture into the realm of bushes as they looked fair, so will leave them till after the straddie trip next week.
shackles themselves are a whole world of hurt if you have a siezed bolt and you dont have an oxy set handy style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
got the good old thing back to within 10mm of straight which is good compared to the 25-30 it was out prior. amazing how much a few mm's of wear on pins and bushes can add up to.
gotta hunt up a full set of 3 5/8" centered shackles as i now have 4" on the front and 3 5/8" on the rear. off to british offroad next week i suppose style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
didnt realise how bad it was till i loaded a heap of paving blocks into it the other day... that straightened it up and it slowly went back to its old self as i unloaded them.
mine tended to take off to the passenger side when i changed gear, ie i back off the gas and the unit headed left, put power back on back it came to the right.
will see tomorrow how the new shackles have or have not helped that.
PS and the gon2far link works fine for me ferno.

Sorry, problem was this end with the server, couldn't access any links, so had to logoff/log back on again, stupid T***** big puddle ,clear as mud it is!!
Update on sus steering ; NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING!!!upon jacking up of front end this morn.,although the u-bolts LOOKED tight , there was a very minute amount of movement in them, resulting in about one to one and a half threads of tightening!
However, I haven't taken it for a drive yet so don't know if it solved the problem, I feel like such a der!!!!!

Happy New Year Ferno
And welcome to the knowledge of loose "U" bolts Your penance shall be 10 second Inhalation of a dirty nappy! No wonder it steered like a Stoned Crow now go and check the two tie rod ends on the horizontal steering box to steering relay rod and also the pitman( Drop Arm) nut, (have assistant move st/wheel and check for movement )the nut is about 1 1/8sae I think , as this will give a knocking sound and excess play in the steering , tighten to 60-80 Ft/lbs regards Rocket

PS and the gon2far link works fine for me ferno.
I recently found these gon2far suspension kits online and was looking for more info (the page referring to them seems to tell em they shut down) so I started poking around on here- found this OLD thread that mentioned it.
Can anyone tell me more about these kits?
Do they still make one?
Is there a similar kit?
Is it worth trying to track down a 2nd hand kit for my S3 1975 SWB?
