View Full Version : New or Used D90?

I've been searching for a while now for a D90.

Thinking my options are:
- Buy used td5 D90
- Buy new puma here D90 from dealership
- Import new

There are pros/cons for each option, I'm just wondering who/what deals are around locally (Aus) from any dealerships. Has anyone imported a new 90 recently? how has the price compared to off the lot of a dealership?

Pro's of the td5 used would be mainly price. Cons - lack of options (although I dont need to be fancy)

Pro's of puma are new options, warranty, looks (minor exterior upgrades). Con's - price.

It doesn't seem the Defenders MY13 are taking any cuts on price as of yet.

I would suggest that "importing" a new Defender would be a massively expensive exercise relative to simply buying a new one from an Aussie dealership.
"Doing Deals"?...I think they are. If you check out "Carsales", you'll see 'em from around $42/43K driveaway to $50K+!!!
I believe that a reasonable new "driveaway" price would be around the $42K mark.
Cheers, Pickles.

thanks - I agree 42 driveaway would be reasonable but some are very far away from this. I did the costings (roughly) from what info I could find available and it looks roughly around the same mark (more hassle to import).

I should add I'm thinking of converting to automatic as I do massive amounts of city (Syd) driving. The td5 is beneficial in cost in that aspect too compared w/ the puma due to compushift, etc.

I would not convert a puma to Auto, really not worth it, I drive my 90 puma in the city once to twice a week, while the clutch is heavy you do get used to it and you find that 1st gear is slow enough to crawl in that if you just leave a gap unlike most people you do not need to start and stop so frequently you just coast along like a snail. (albeit Brisbane traffic)

44K is about the average price I see puma 90's going for. seem to be a fair few around second hand also in the high 30's if you were to consider a second hand puma 90. I have considered selling mine to get a 110 single cab.

I love my 90 but the limited space can be frustrating some times, might be able to get a 110 single cab cheaper? (that is if its going to fit your needs)

from what I have seen second hand td5's are near the price of a puma but lack all the 'comforts' for what of a better term. that the puma has.

I'd buy a new one, warranty and free servicing make it almost not much point in running and older one. Especially if you job out your maintenance. Add in a novated lease...

Auto conversion on a puma is not cheap, nor is it on a td5. Ten thousand as a starting price with used bits.

The puma is miles easier to drive on traffic than the td5. Only mod I would consider is a red booster for the clutch, but even without the puma clutch is quite light.

It wasn't that long ago they were selling new 90s for 39 driveaway. In fact I think they have a special incentive on the 90 right now.

Any idea which dealer these special incentives are? Haven't been informed of any in my area.

I contacted a few people stating conversion for td5 about 4-5k w/ install.

For the ashcroft puma runs about 8500landed + install I believe (which is too spendy)

I looked at buying a td5 before I bought my puma 90, I just think the price of a td5 is too much. I like them but I kept finding that for a half decent one they were selling at $30000 and they were up to ten years old.

Just regarding the clutch. I find the clutch in the Puma really light and just did my first sydney traffic over the weekened and the clutch was great. Maybe it's because I am used to triple plate clutches that rattle, give you quad pump and are really heavy. The idea of an auto is nice but the clutch is not heavy at all.

Or get an uber-cool D90 Tdi ute with auto trans for less than half the price of a new one...

Go on, you know you want to

You should be offered free 3 year services if you work for a vaugely corporate company, and if they have not already started, end of year discounts on my13 plated cars in the lot can't be far away.

Or get a 300 Tdi Defender 90 Ute, complete with an auto gearbox. A mate of mine has one and it's always "on the market" if the money is right....

I have been keeping an eye out for a second hand puma 90 anywhere from 2011 to 2013 models - I find that most of the ones coming up for sale are priced way over the recommended sale price on redbook. It almost seems that people are pricing the cars at the original price they bought it for and then add the original price for each accessory they have added to the car..: )

Has anyone bought a secondhand 90 or 110 recently? Did you have to haggle on the price quite a bit or was your purchase in your opinion priced at what it was worth?

I would agree with your comments.

I had spent the last few months keeping an eye on 2013 90's and their pricing.

Some of the pricing people are asking are crazy really. Cars close to retail at 2 years old with 30k km.

For instance.

2013 - looks very nice but $50k +on roads is ridiculous. You can drive away a brand new 2014MY on the road for less that this, with nigh on identical spec if you speak to your local dealer.

2013 Land Rover Defender 90 13MY (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Land-Rover-Defender-2013/SSE-AD-2495162/?Cr=19&sdmvc=1)

Less said about the pricing of this one the better: 2010. 40k km. $45k +onroads :D:

2010 Land Rover Defender 90 10MY (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Land-Rover-Defender-2010/SSE-AD-2497921/?Cr=13&sdmvc=1)

Another one that is just as bad...

2012 - 30km $43k + onroads

2012 Land Rover Defender 90 12MY (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Land-Rover-Defender-2012/SSE-AD-2530176/?Cr=17&sdmvc=1)

If you have a local dealer, give them a call. You may be suprised.

I ended up ordering a new one.

I have looked at all of them and wondered if people realise that one could get a brand new car for that price or cheaper once you take into account that with a car purchased from a dealer I will get the GST back.

Also had a look at this great looking 110. It started off at $65k + onroad and now it is advertising a massive price drop - Now going at bargain basement price of $60k + onroad.. : )

2013 Land Rover Defender 110 13MY (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Land-Rover-Defender-2013/SSE-AD-2416391/?Cr=6&sdmvc=1)

It is an awesome truck, but in my opinion way overpriced..

Hell!, if he wants 60k for that you can buy mine for 50k, I have a lot more accessories on mine. I'll put the money I'm planning on spending on converting to auto towards a new auto Patrol.

Mines just clicked 12months old.

I'm no wimp and my legs are my strong point but I have to say the Puma clutch is bloody heavy, I didn't realise until I jumped in a manual navara and almost thrust my foot through the floor boards, I thought the darn thing was broken, it was like butter, then I realised how heavy the Puma clutch is.

Try sitting in stop start Syd traffic over an hr a day morn then afternoon, not a weekend trip to the city, do it constantly for a year and then tell me you love it. It's Hell I tell you.

I would love an auto, then those stupid idiots texting on there mobiles while in traffic won't **** me off as much, they stop, start then stop when they are supposed to go, leaves you behind them wondering if your Arthur or Martha. Oh the joys of an auto. Sit back relax cock one leg up and go with the flow. :)

Any other Puma owners agree it's a heavy clutch or am I going to look like a woos here. Lol.

Yeah yeah I'm already on my way to Bunnings to buy a can of Harden The "F" Up. (I'll say it before someone tells me) lol. :)

The puma clutch is heavy compared to a hilux

But I don't consider it heavy once you have driven it for a bit and who use the clutch in Sydney traffic anyway the best part of Sydney traffic is done in first with the anti stall :D

And yes I drove the puma for over a year in bumper to bumper traffic during the first lot of ****ty road works on the M5 let alone this second lot.
