well x mas eve stuck on the side of the road outside brisbane
aint the place to be, but it was for me.
so the question comes after installing new wheel bearings on the
drivers side. how many seals are there in a front hub of a 1993
LR disco non abs 3.5v8? at the mo there is only one at the rear,
and nothing at the front of the hub? only way the greese stays in is by the axle flange gasket and the axle cap (rubber end cap).

8) howdy, you must have finding puddles to fall in, yep the rubber cap is pretty important, as it is the outer seal of the cv shaft, i will try to email you a piccy from the m/manual and the parts cd 8) harry
reminds me my rubber things are cracked too!

I use a "ZIp" tie around the plastic end cap to ensure it doesnt work off the lip.

as for stopping ingress of water, i think its not possible in any marque, not just land rover, look at boat trailers, as soon as the hub goes under water it is cooled, cooling reduces the pressure inside the hub, thereby causing the liquid {ie water} to be drawn in, wot stuffs the bearings.
only in cars we usually travel long enough to boil the water off out of the grease, and we don't sit our axles under water for ten minutes stationery while we mess with the boat, so cars get away with. but where does the salt go? well it ain't boiled off, it just sits around eating the bearings and reducing the grease.
8) it ain't easy to play in the wet with out maintenance
have fun, don't change the other bearings on the roadside
God i sound like bossy boots tonight!!!

8) yeah, 'sposed to fix it before it breaks, so it don't bust onasomoneashead, or crash.
keep the blue on top eh

Water ingress is greatly reduced by having open breathers terminated in a small petrol filter to stop dust.
As I said earlier a zip tie around inner edge of cap will seal it and hold it on.

the breathers wouldnt affect the wheel bearings because they are two
seperate parts? i think. well if so wouldnt the diff oil get into where the
bearings are? :?:

Bit of bad luck there Discowhite,,,
if you think back on it,,
did it give you any little signs of inpending doom?

Landy wheel bearings used to be lubricated with oil from the diffs and when this was the case there was very little trouble experienced with the bearings.
The trick is to convert your currently greased bearings to oil lubricated bearings. This is quite simple but there are a few tricks.
1. Remove the hub, bearings and stub axle.
2. Remove the AXLE oil seal from inside the stub axle. This was there to stop the oil from the diff travelling along the axle and reaching the bearings.
3. Replace the OE Grease Wiper at the inner hub position with a double lipped, double garter spring oil seal. The Grease Wiper looks like an oil seal but dosen't have any garter springs at all and this is part of the problem.
4. Ensure that the surface that the oil seal runs on is in good condition - if not, either clean up with fine emery or fit a stainless steel speedie sleeve.
5. Now before you replace the stub axle, drill a 3mm dia hole between where the two wheel bearings are located. This will allow the diff oil to feed directly between the two wheel bearings.
6. Regarding the rubber cap on the drive member, either silicone them on and carry a spare or replace your drive members with $120 units from Maxidrive - these come with threaded steel endcaps.
7. Check your diff oil regularly, especially after initial conversion as some oil will be used to 'fill' the hubs.
Happy 4WDing

Sounds like you've done this before Xtreme,,,
Are all Disco's the same?

Have only done a number of Series I Disco's and Defenders.
I believe Series II Disco's are different

I can only think Landrover changed to seals to stop water in the diffs reaching the wheel bearings.

Diffs don't last too long when lubricated by water!
Suggest servicing your breathers and keep the water out of the whole axle housing.
