Hi All,

Well it's time to show you all my new purchase....

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

It's on the water - so at least 6 weeks away....

I know that Juddy has mentioned the vehicle in a previous post..

I am very excited to say that it's mine.. (Sound track of an evil laugh :wasntme: ).

Naturally once I have the 101 registered I will be posting more detailed pictures, along with what I intend to change/upgrade on the vehicle...

It already has - v8, disc brakes, automatic, lpg + petrol, roof tent, side awning, ex-ambulance, CB, reversing camera, spot lights, etc, etc...

Great vehicle and I have to thank Juddy for his assistance in sourcing it for me..

Now I'm off to win tatts to pay for it!!!

Hi All,

I thought that I might as well start a thread on the new arrival... I don't yet have it in my hands - but it is in the country...

Some of these photo's have already been posted - but I thought that I would put all of them into the one thread. Here are all of the pictures that I currently have...

I do not know all of the specifications of the vehicle yet, but I do know:

* 12V
* 68,000 Miles
* 3.5V8 (Petrol & LPG)
* ZF Auto 4 speed
* Mallory Dual point distributor and coil
* Facet redtop fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator

* Howling Moon Roof Tent - accessible from inside once up.
* Side Awning
* Roof Rack at the front with 2 ammo boxes for storage.
* Light bar with 4 spot lights
* Spare wheel mounted on the back
* 2 Batteries in side locker - starting battery & leisure battery on split charge relay.
* LPG tank on left - Stainless Steel Petrol tank on right
* Michelin 255/100 r16 XZL tyres
* Range Rover A-Bar on Front with spot lights
* 2 Reverse Lights

It also came with a range rover power steering box - so can be converted to have power steering in the future...

Oh and Sitec - I haven't even thoughts about names for it yet...

And how did you know I was going to ask about names!!!! :D It looks great, and I'm very interested to see how it drives with the auto, and have a look at the LT230 setup, prop angles etc. If its geared right it should be really nice to drive! You've got plenty of ratios to choose from with that transfer case too! Hopefully it will have eliminated the front prop drone, tho I believe ambo's not to be so bad as they're heavier... Looking forward to your first post upon its arrival which won't be long now! Cheers for now!! :)

Excellent buy at the money, even after you've paid shipping and duties, with all the work that's been done on it, and the spares package that would let you put it back to standard as well.

Hi All,

Well it turned out to be a bigger adventure than I had planned or hoped for, but hey - that's Land Rovers for you! :wasntme:

Firstly I have to give a massive thanks to Gavin and Mick for sharing the excellent adventure. Put quite simply - I couldn't have done it without them.

Next I have to think LandyBitz for sourcing and importing the vehicle for me. It was great to meet Justin & Gill - lovely people.

I am very happy with the vehicle and am rapt to finally have it back at the manor. There are some small cosmetic things that I will do to it over the coming months - after I sort out the mechanical ones...

After a day of sweltering heat in downtown sunny Queanbeyan - we hit the road at approximately 4:30pm.

I think that the conditions (38c +) certainly didn't help the 101 - the poor thing is probably used to much cooler climates..

First minor drama - was getting lost whilst driving through Canberra - it's always fun to drive around the nations capitol, including a wave to Tony in the Lodge as we drove past..

The first drama happened when Gavin reported the the car was over-heating. We stopped, let it cool down and then checked the radiator which was bone dry. We topped up the radiator (3+ litres of water from memory) and set off again.

We had to stop again about 30kms out of Yass - again over heating, again an empty radiator... Which had the 101 brains trust (Mick/Gav) seen it deep contemplation as there were no obvious signs of water leakage. The 101 was not a happy chappy. Another cool off period, and 3+ litres and we set off again.

I shall let Mick/Gav explain in more technical detail what the problem appears to be - but they made a temporary repair to the radiator cap, and along with highway driving and slowly reducing temps meant that the 101 behaved reasonably well for the rest of the trip..

Here is a photo at one of the road-side stops (north of Yass I believe):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3519_zpsbce26390.jpg

Here is another photo taken later in the night - south of Wangaratta I think:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3523_zps99c07095.jpg

It was at this stop that we discovered a largish oil leak which required a top up of 1 Litre of oil. Gav thinks that it is a rear main seal.

We topped him up, and sailed into Wandong arriving at approximately 2:30am.

The next step is to work out a list of mechanical issues and then cosmetic ones. Everything very much doable and expected on a car of this vintage.

I think that the heat got to the car and all 3 of us to be honest. It was like a perfect storm - just too hot.

All's well that ends well - it was a great trip, the beast is now resting at home!

Once again - a massive Thank You to Gav and Mick. The trip would not have been possible without them.

Now I'm back off to get some Zzz's..

Its great to see that you got the Ambo home. Check the little S thermostat bypass pipe behind the water pump - it is hard to get at and is often overlooked - it can split and cause coolant loss.

Garry

Homestar
3rd February 2014, 10:06 AM
Coolant loss was caused by the radiator cap - and extreme temperatures. The cap didn't quite seat - probably only by a mm. A bit of wire under the rubber at the bottom to make it protrude a bit further saw no further issues, and no more coolant loss. Using my IR thermometer, we found the engine never got past 94 but the temp gauge is out a fair bit, as is the fuel gauge, so thinking the 10 volt regulator may have seen better days.

Despite the dramas, thee vehicle drives VERY well, and is comfortable at 100KPH on the freeway, dropping down to around 80 on the steepest hills - a much better effort than mine can manage. All in all, a great vehicle.:)

A very good unit, impressive.

Good to see you got back, sorry I missed chatting with a few people here.

It was a warm day. Pity those people selling cookers and BBQs doing demos.

ps, on the showground grass there are no trees for shade of course. But the camper sellers all want level ground to set up their shoplets...

The Qbn swap meet a few weeks back was around the carpark where there is plenty of shade, but its uneven of course. (The crowd was about the same).

Hi Gav,

Work hasn't stopped this week - 16 hour days including yesterday, so today is the first chance that I have had a quick look/start/drive of the 101. :D

You asked me to take a photo of the automatic gearbox id plate on the 101...

9th February 2014, 09:25 AM
Ok, that all makes sense now. I haven't played with the Borg Warner TC's from the later RRC's. looks like the 005 version is from a 3.9.

Did it start and run ok after a week sitting there? I'll pop up this week and have a look over it properly if that's ok? Maybe pull some covers off and see how easy it will be to drop the box and get that oil leak sorted. :)

Hi Gav,

That would be fantadtic. I am at home on Mon, Tue, Wed and then back in NZ Thu-Sun.

I am planning on going out on Mon and hopefully getting the rear-main-seal, oils, viscous fan...

All systems are go!

The 101 started after a little bit -first attempt I forgot the choke! Second attempt it stalled. Third attempt all good!

Cant wait to get it on the road.

Should I also get auto tranny fluid for the service?

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/819498-post15.html

What do you think?

Definitely from a Classic Rangie, although the main gearbox will be a ZF 4HP22.
The B/W is a straight swop for an LT230 and one will bolt in in plave of the other, the LT230 does need a slightly shorter front prop shaft though.

Gearing is about spot on with that setup though. I had a 4HP22 with a Borg Warner in my old GS behind an efi 3.9, went very well and was even happy pulling an Ambi on the trailer at 100 kph, with more to give...

GG confirmed today the box is a 4HP22. A couple of questions if you have seen this conversion before - how did you do the kick down cable? This one has none and requires the driver to drop it back manually if required. As you say, the gearing is spot on with this set up.:). The lack of kick down is its only draw back IMO.

Also, if it were mine, I'd fit a tacho. I found I couldn't work out when the converter locked up - oh, and on that point, should the converter unlock by itself - without the kick down cable fitted? I couldn't tell if it was doing that or not.

DasLandRoverMan
10th February 2014, 02:11 AM
Mine had the complete engine/box and efi setup from a Rangie, so everything was there and connected to start.

The cable should be there (comes up from the left hand side of the box) and is probably best attached to the throttle lever on the carb, and make a bracket to hold the outer of the cable.
After that it's a question of adjusting how tight to set the cable to suit how you want the box to change gear.

Tighter makes it hold gears longer before changing up, and will kickdown quicker, looser makes it a bit more sedate, earlier changes and needs more throttle input to change down.

Lockup speed should be the same as a Range Rover at about 55 - 57mph (5.54 diffs and 9.00x16's work out similarly to 3.54:1 and 205r16's) although earlier 4HP22's had a 45 mph lockup.
You should be able to feel it, although no kickdown cable may be dulling the sensation?

Not totally sure on unlock speed, but between 50 and 55 mph on later boxes, not sure about earlier 45 mph lockup ones.

Homestar
10th February 2014, 06:36 AM
Thanks for that. I think the kickdown was left off because it may have been too hard for them to connect it to the twin carbs on the 3.5 - not sure.

Hi All,

My 101 came with an automatic gearbox - being a 4HP-22 (with the Borg Warner 13-61-005 Transfer Case).
The gearbox and transfer case came out of a 92 RR 3.9 efi

There is no actual gearbox selector cover - so you can't see what gear you are in when you move the auto lever.

I plan to make my own - it shouldn't be too hard to make something from thin aluminium sheet, cover it in some sort of leather/fabric, and mark the P-R-N-D...

My question is - what is the actual shift pattern? I am guessing that it is:

My 101 didn't have anything marked on it either (couldn't be bothered trying to make the Rangie one fit) and my 110 doesn't have facility either as it uses the standard Defender rubber gator on the tunnel with the selector coming through.

I've never found it a problem to remember what position the lever is in, each to their own though.

Hi All,

Well - no photos, but quite a bit of work done on the 101 this weekend, and all of it thanks to Super Gav!

Fluids drained
Gearbox out
Rear Main Seal Replaced
Gearbox back in
Front prop shaft boot replaced
Rear prop shaft boot replaced
Gearbox selector adjusted (can now get PRND321 instead of just PRND32)
Rear propshaft universal joint replaced
Viscous fan unit replaced

A fair bit of swearing and cut knuckles, but we got there in the end.

I felt like a council worker - supervising most of the time... :wasntme:

Thanks Super Gav - couldn't do it without you...

Now we need to finish off some other items and it's off for a RWC...

Good work guys!! SA road worthy was fairly easy. I went armed with the rego numbers of other SA 101's so they knew what they were.. I also rang up before hand and got a statement of requirements which listed things like exhaust outlets, reversing lights, sash belts, no need for an interior mirror etc etc. I was then able to go armed with the list of requirements, so that when asked about stuff, I was able to hand emails, lists etc over showing I'd addressed these points and the tester then no longer seemed to fussed as I'd done my homework. Good luck with it all.. Hope to see it on the road soon. :)

Hi All,

Well the 101 is getting closer and closer to RWC...

Today's work (thanks again to Super Gav):

Replace Engine Oil & Filter
Replace Auto Trans Oil & Filter
Replace Transfer Case Oil
Replace Coolant
Re-wire headlights on the roof
Remove clutch pedal assembly, slave/master cylinder
Check Wiring
Install rear view mirror
Fix latch on a cupboard door
Check Front & Rear Diff Oil Levels
Check Lights
Check Fan
Adjust Fan Belt

We took it for a test drive - all good, but have discovered that the flame traps aren't installed and it's causing an oil leak... But that's another story.

We're getting there! :)

Hi All,

Well the 101 is getting closer and closer to RWC - although it feels like it is happening at a glacial pace...

I sent the 101 off to a local Land Rover expert to have the carb's tuned - and also to check the car to see what (if anything) was needed for the RWC.

The local expert is great - but painfully slow...

* He has fitted the flame traps
* He has tuned the engine
* He replaced a globe that wasn't working (I hadn't even noticed)
* He adjusted the rear brakes

He uses a mobile LPG guy - and I had instructed him to get the LPG tank pressure tested, at a cost of between $300-$400. The LPG guy came out, they removed the tank, and inspected the entire system. The LPG guy said: "This system does not comply with Australian rules and regulations. Various fixtures/fittings will need to be replaced. You have to rip out the entire thing and start again."

I can't get the RWC with a half installed system, so I have instructed the mechanic to remove the entire lot. Long term - I am going to install a second petrol tank for greater range...

Next up - the mechanic noticed that the speedo wasn't working. He inspected the speedo cable and realised that the end was broken off. He also said that the speedo drive unit is stuck solid in the gearbox... None of this is news to me - Gavin had already worked that out...

But you can't get a RWC without a working speedo. I asked the mechanic to repair the cable / unit... I was hoping that he might have a magical trick, knowing that he is an expert...

He came back to me yesterday and said: "I have removed the speedo cable and sent it away to have a new one made up, the company I use copies the current cable for length. You should have it within 2-3 days. As for the drive unit - it's damaged, and I can't get it out. So I am going to remove the back of the gearbox and get it on the bench. Once on the bench I rekon I will have more luck getting the unit out."

Everything that he has said makes sense...

It just takes time to get these things resolved. I know that I will be very happy once these issues are fixed, and I can finally start using it!

Fingers crossed I get to Melrose - but my gut feeling is that it isn't looking good. :(

There is no need to get a speedo cable made - they are a standard series 3 LT95 cable maybe also common to other LT95s.

It is good to see you are getting things sorted but unfortunately finding others.

Would that be the same for the auto gearbox?

Hi Garry,

My 101 has a Range Rover automatic gearbox in it. Because of this it has a longer front prop shaft.

I had assumed that because the front Prop Shaft was longer - that perhaps the engine/gearbox/transfer box combination was longer, and therefore it was better to be safe than sorry, and hence that's why I agreed to get one made up.

It's probably more expensive - but at this point I just want it fixed! :)

Gav may know the answer to this one?

Homestar
19th March 2014, 02:23 PM
Speedo drive is the same between the LT95 and the Borg Warner TC - the speedo was connected, but the cable was stuck fast in the corroded drive, and no amount of wriggling, pulling or anything would free it, so when we dropped the box out, the cable was damaged.

As mentioned, the only real way to get this sorted is to take the arse off the TC and punch the old speedo drive out. Personally, I think the end of the existing cable where it broke could have been re shaped to go back in a new drive, but a new cable would be easier.

Prop shaft length is very different to the standard 101 as the auto box and BW TC put the drive a lot further back. the back prop shaft is quite short, but the angles on both are good. The front drive shaft was very noisy - I think due to a combination of the drive angle - it is further to the drivers side of the car than the LT95 would have it, and the fact the prop shaft looks like it was a back yard job - it worked fine, but the noise was shocking. Hopefully these drive shafts are what we are looking for to shut the over run noises the 101's make.

It seems like identical shafts used in the UK have been successful.

It's been a long haul for you Tom, but hopefully you are on the home stretch. Would love to see you be able to get to Melrose - I know the vehcile is up to it once you get it on the road. :)

Hi guys. The standard speedo cable will fit.. The rear PTO face on the LT230 (same transfer case as in Toms I assume) is virtually flush with the front face of the chassis x member on mine with the diesel so its a lot further back. With a little bit of careful re routing the cable is surprisingly long! I also have a few spare LT230 speedo drives if that helps. Can bung one in the post.. Don't forget the GPS Speedo option... As for going over the pits... they didn't even check to see if mine works!! :D Good luck for Melrose!! You can do it!! Borrow the ID off another 101 for the week!! :wasntme:

It's a bit tougher over here - they will check the speedo during the road test. A RWC is getting quite hard to get now - the licenced testers have to take photos of any defective items as well as some mandatory points - like tyres, etc, and must be filed for 7 years. Testers won't run the risk of doing bodgey roadies any more as it is much easier for them to be sprung.

That's about the only item they could fail on this vehicle - it will stand up to any scrutiny.

Hi All,

Well the day has finally come...

The 101 has had the following work done to it over the last month or two...

* Rear main seal replaced
* Engine oils replaced
* Viscous fan replaced
* Hand brake adjusted
* Rear brakes adjusted
* New speedo cable
* Clutch pedal,master clyinder, pipes removed
* New double carbine front prop shaft installed
* LPG system removed - inspected and non Australian compliant
* New radiator cap installed
* RWC and Club Registration
* Normal lights / lower spot lights converted to HID
* Australian Inverter installed
* Exterior light wired up (was installed, not wired in though)
* Engine tuned by a Land Rover "expert"...
* Rear view mirror installed
* Flame traps installed
* Small convex mirrors installed on main mirros
* Drivers seat adjusted - goes all the way back now..

That's the main points - anyway, time for some pics!

First up - Club registration plate and Head Lights converted into HID (the alternator couldn't keep up when all lights were on):
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3829_zpsdbc99038.jpg

The LPG tank used to live here - the entire LPG system has been removed. It was inspected and found not to be Australian compliant in anyway. It's gone - and one day a second petrol tank will go here:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3832_zpsa28a9d3f.jpg

This exterior light is now wired in and works:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3833_zpsb1fa2fee.jpg

This interior light just needed 3xAAA batteries - installed and working:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3835_zps6a05ee7e.jpg

The UK inverter was removed, and an Australian one installed. This has 2xUSB chargers and 2xPower Points:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3839_zpsdeeaa268.jpg

The UK style marine/caravan plug has been replaced when an Australian 15amp plug. The theory being that you plug this in when at a caravan park:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3843_zpse9a5674a.jpg

These power points have been converted from UK - to Australian. These only work when the Car is plugged into Mains using the above 15amp lead...
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3838_zpsfc32bd15.jpg

New padlock installed on the spare tyre:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3801_zpsa9c79b1f.jpg

New padlock installed on the petrol cap:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3845_zps5d8b4c4e.jpg

The engine covers (both left/right hand side) were missing. Here is a before photo of a new one:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3654_zps00e5ba06.jpg

I painted them with an engine enamel, figuring that they would get hot. Here is one hanging in the tree drying. Both sides have been painted/installed:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3678_zps2da85b6f.jpg

Rear number plate installed with a number plate light:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3842_zps8978bfce.jpg

An automatic gearbox selector installed:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3847_zps87a91b81.jpg

There was carpet glued/installed directly behind the engine cover. When the rear main seal was replaced we damaged the glued carpet when removing it. I have replaced the carpet, but this time velcro'd it on:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3850_zps8ab04db1.jpg

The new key ring - a lovely surprise from SWMBO:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3824_zps64f32563.jpg

And lastly I wanted a second spare. Thanks to Stuee - very much thanks to Stuee - here is the before:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3804_zpsc1cd219f.jpg

Sand Blasted. Rather than spend hours with a wire wheel, I payed $25 to have it sand blasted and coated in primer:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3811_zpsf2593d6b.jpg

And the first coat of paint:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_3828_zps726917fa.jpg

Now that the 101 is finally on the road, I plan to start using it. As my journey through 101 ownership begins I have no doubt that I will look at future changes/modifications. The only plans on the to-do list are:

* Purchase a spare tyre, and work out a way to install it on the vehicle.
* Install a second petrol tank
* Replace the CB (UK one, so different frequency)

None of these are urgent - I want to get out and enjoy the vehicle!!!

Thanks to everybody for their help in getting the 101 on the road - particular thanks to Bacicat and Stuee !!!

You need to sort the kickdown, the kickdown cable serves 2 purposes, one if for kickdown....but the other is for line pressure, its engine load feedback, so increases line pressure the more the foot is down. not good for the auto to run low line pressure as it burns out clutches

Hi All,

It's been a while - but that doesn't mean that nothing has happened. Well, not much anyway...

I had the roof top tent removed and the rear ladder removed. I did that because I found the tent too much of a hassle to use - so I figure that I will save on a bit of weight, and it gives the 101 a bit of a cleaner look.

I will keep the tent/ladder and if/when I eventually sell the vehicle, the new owner can re-install them if they so choose:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_4063_zps8fae0c39.jpg

The 101's engine has been running like a dog, so I had it looked at by Romsey British Automotive. They:

Replaced LHS exhaust manifolds
Replaced RHS exhaust manifolds
Replaced Spark Plus + HTC Leads
Replaced Ignition Coil (the old one was leaking)
Adjusted the timing & idle on the carbies
Replaced Ballast Resistor on the Coil

I have to say that the 101 is now quieter (well, a little bit) and is driving better.

Oh - and I have also decided on a name.... "Dirty Harry" :wasntme:

Well Dirty Harry is sick - AGAIN...

I took him for a test drive on Sunday. It was cold (6c) but fine when I took off and admittedly the weather turned terrible - raining heavily.

I drove from home to Epping (about 45 minutes the long way) - things seemed ok.

On the return trip home -

Dirty Harry started to overheat when in 3rd gear - needed to get up the hills.
I came off the highway and went the back roads - so I could nurse him home.
The temp immediately went back to normal, but then he started missing/back firing in top gear...

:angrylock: :censored:

I don't know if water was getting inside the engine compartment, causing issues or not.. But I was quite :(

I'm sending him back to the mechanics - hopefully they can find something..

Hi All,

Well I have good news on Harry.

Yesterday Gav & Mick came up and we did a few jobs. First job - take Harry for a test drive, and when the temp gauge was reading in the RED - check the temp with a digital temp gauge.

The digital temp gauge showed that the actual temp is approx 82-83c - even though the (repaired) Land Rover temp gauge is sitting on the RED line.

So - the Land Rover temp gauge is out of whack and the engine is not over heating! (No loss of water from the radiator either) :eek:

The simple fix - install a VDO temp gauge and ignore the Land Rover one.

Also checked the oil leak - it's coming from the old oil cooler, which isn't connected anymore. So whatever oil was in it - is coming out. I just need to plug the oil cooler up and clean-up the mess!

Gav was quite happy with the way that Harry now drives - much quieter, and the front prop shaft rumble has also reduced slightly.

So all up - good progress. A few small jobs to do based on the above, but it's all good news in getting Harry ready for summer use.

Yep, she is driving really nicely. The 3.9 is much smoother and quieter than the 3.5. Quite disconcerting looking at a temp gauge that says it's hot when it's not though.

It didn't even break a sweat and I was giving it heaps. Coolant temp at 82 ish - it has an 82 degree thermostat, so bang on, oil temp measured 73 when we pulled up (measured on the sump), so it's right where it should be.

Hopefully now we can see it out at some camps with the rest of us.:)

Hi All,

Some work done on the 101...

Firstly - second spare is now mounted at the back. Each wheel sits on top of the bumperett - which should help take some of the weight off the frame holding it onto the 101:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_4440_zpsffce18de.jpg

Next - as mentioned below the original temp gauge is reading out by a country mile. The intention was to install a secondary temp gauge (keeping the original working). I ended up installing a new one - that screws into the block where the original one did. I've keep all of the wiring for the original temp gauge - but it isn't connected. Here's the new one:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_4435_zpsa827703a.jpg

Lastly - I removed the old oil cooler that was leaking because it wasn't connected up. I have kept EVERYTHING from the old engine (including the oil cooler) - so it can all be returned to standard one day, if so desired:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_4441_zpsc6e0186c.jpg

Hi All,

A small update on the 101... I took it back to the mechanic after about 750km of driving after the 3.9 was installed. The mechanic had always asked me to bring it back so that he could tune the carbies . It is an absolute pig to start when hot (another thread on here).

He adjusted the carbies - he said that it was running too rich, taking about 1.5 turns off the mixture. :eek:

And the end result...? Well it still won't start when hot. :mad:

On another note - I picked up a different tow bar for the 101. It's a combination 50mm tow ball / pintle hook. I had to get the grinder out on 2 of the bolts on the existing pintle hook - as they were rusted on solid... Here is the new unit fitted:

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_4574_zps0a95f18a.jpg

Despite the fact that I have installed it lower - when I hooked up my 7x5 trailer it was on a upward angle!
I need to seek clarification with VicRoads or the local police, but somehow I suspect that it wouldn't be legal towing a trailer around like that..

Oh well - perhaps I have to re-install the original pintle hook and I will just have to go out and find an ex-army trailer... ;) :angel: :wasntme:

Hi Sitec,

For the moment I will be holding onto the old pintle hitch... The trailer that I experimented with is my old 7x5 box trailer that I use for all kinds of stuff.

Garry's idea of swapping the springs around sounds like a good idea - but I assume that means that the trailer will then sit too high when I tow it with my daily driver, the VW Tiguan... I use it quite a bit with the Tiguan - and don't want to loose that capability. It's the trailer that I used to pick-up the engine in.

So I might just have to consider talking to Mighty Mick...! :wasntme:

Hi Tom.
I knew a guy in the UK who had the same problem... We made up a flat plate 120 x 12 flat from memory. At one end of the plate was a hole big enough to drop over the original NATO hitch when its bolted in its original place on the rear x member. At the lower end of the plate was a selection of holes to bolt a std UK 50mm ball (different to the Australian receiver type). On the back of the plate there were two stay bars that clipped up to the chassis. Can draw it if ya like and post on here..... It worked very well.. I have a UK ball in the shed too.

Hi All,

The tools on the front of the 101 were looking a bit sad.. Basically the wood was rotten - you could pull it apart with your fingers:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/d97c0a36-28fa-4cfb-b800-1397fe86c863_zps30071f9b.jpg

I hunted around for a few months at various hardware stores, but I simply could not find new handles that were of the same dimensions. I wanted them the same because of the way they are attached to the front of the 101.

The solution would be to buy bigger handles and cut them down to size, but I have no wood working tools at all. The solution? A friendly visit to the local men's shed, 6 weeks later and..

And now - here they are refurbished:

A big thanks to the Kilmore Men's Shed.

Hi All,

I splashed out and purchased some Christmas presents for the 101 - seeing as how it's been behaving so well recently..

* Sat Nav/DVD Player/CD Player/Colour Reverse Camera/USB/Touch Screen/Radio, etc.

* CB (comes with a short/long antenna)

I had a standard video rca (yellow/red/white) cable run to the back of the 101, as the unit can output video.. The plan is to purchase a small LCD TV, connect it up to the inverter, and hence we can watch DVD's in the back...

It also comes with blue-tooth for a mobile telephone, not that I think I will ever use this based on the noise levels in a 101 !!!

Oh the same of modern toys!

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_4885_zpsbacdd0f2.jpg

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_4887_zps6bf1acba.jpg

Unfortunately the new temp gauge that I installed months ago stopped working (before any of this work was done) - so I need to sort that little issue out...

Perhaps I shouldn't have spoilt the 101... Only joking!!!

Hi All,

Small update... Made an improvement on the 101 last weekend - to help whilst out and about camping... This is mounted at the rear - a bit of light helps when setting up camp in the dark!

Hi All,

Well what I thought would be a small job - turned into a medium job.

I set about installing Defender seats in the 101 - wow, some of those nuts/bolts are hard to get at...

Before:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_5413_zpsj40tgogq.jpg

And After:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_5415_zpspi8ukx3f.jpg

Something wasn't 100% correct with either seat - perhaps the seat was out of alignment or perhaps the original holes weren't square - but I had to drill 1 hole on each side (at least 3 of them lined up!)

Cheers.

So I went camping in the 101 last weekend - and the final morning my hands got all sticky with black residue from the steering wheel.. :(

I believe that it's a common problem with Series steering wheels - I am not sure if it's moisture in the air, but I've never experienced it in the 101 before.

Looking at the 101 - the paint had certainly worn off over the years:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_5404_zpsh0dprogt.jpg

I gave the steering wheel a light sand:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_5419_zpsjzixzaas.jpg

And here is is sunning itself - after 4 coats over the day:
http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p549/tomb1971/101%20Land%20Rover/IMG_5423_zps38b4thqx.jpg

The plan is to let it dry properly/harden and re-install it next weekend. :)

Hi All,

A small update on the 101... He's got new boots. These are the same ones that Homestar has on his 101, and Ben from QLD has on his. [biggrin]

I spent a lot of time trying to find an original size tyre, but there just isn't anything out there....

These have been fitted (plus 2 spares) for an upcoming trip that I have in August.

I have a few other things in the pipe-line for the 101 also - but mums the word until I get them done!

Hi All,

The 101 is going through a bit of an update in preparation for a big trip in August.. Last post was wider wheels & new tyres.

This update - the roof rack has been removed. I never, ever used the roof rack because it was simply to high up there. Removing the roof rack also means that the old drivings lights (rarely used) got removed, and so did the CB aerial.

I was amazed at how heavy the roof rack was - there was the frame, 2 x ammo boxes, and the driving lights. The 101 is now not as tall, some weight is gone, marginally more aerodynamic, and ever so slightly less top heavy. The main benefit is that it isn't as tall (I do need to re-measure it!)

CB Aerial has been moved & a curved light bar installed.

Anyway - here's some pics:

https://i.imgur.com/WMrpd9u.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/HTXICb9.jpg

I still have more things to attend to:

* Relocate the blinker stalk (from RHS to LHS) - as I have found that I sometimes bump it with my right knee when braking.
* Relocate the drivers door handle - same again, keep bumping it with my knee.
* Tidy up the passenger mirror.. Ahem
* Work on a system for the 2 x rear spares
* Multiple shake down runs
* Full service before the trip

Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,

So another small update - one of my spot lights located on the nudge bar was dead, and it was going to cost some $ to fix it.

I had always had a minor concern that the two x spot lights restricted airflow to the radiator - so I made the decision to remove them and replace them with a small light bar..

https://i.imgur.com/1e4ijG4.jpg

I also replaced the indicator stalk - the old one was tired and had a short in it..

Oh - and I've had power steering and front & rear disc brakes installed as well. [smilebigeye]

I still have a small list of jobs that I am working through - is a Land Rover ever finished? [thumbsupbig]

Cheers,
GG

Hi All,

So I ticked off a few more odd jobs on the 101 on the weekend...

New indicator stalk installed:

https://i.imgur.com/dJHkICk.jpg

I moved the door handles (on both sides) back - giving more knee room.

https://i.imgur.com/YKbH0eD.jpg

I had a bracket fabricated for the mirror arm > onto door bracket. My bracket had completely split and couldn't be welded (it was some kind of cast aluminium by the looks of it). While I was at it - I fitted new pinch weld onto the mirror head (it previously had electrical tape holding the glass on)

https://i.imgur.com/sd6t34m.jpg

And lastly - removed the awning. I know that a lot of people love awnings but the awning that was on the vehicle was difficult to set-up (due to the height of the vehicle), and I have only used it 3 times in 6 years... I figure a little less weight on the vehicle isn't such a bad thing. I left the awning brackets on because (a) they are pop-riveted on, (b) also glued on, (c) I am worried that there is no paint behind the brackets... SWMBO rekons that we can hang towels on the left over brackets [bigrolf]

Hi All,

I've had some minor modifications done to the 101 while we can't use it due to lock down...

Firstly - some rust was found on the rear bumper, which has been repaired:

https://i.imgur.com/DrJiDW1.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/Xd8eyGP.jpg

Next - the side steps have evolved over time from:

a) Plastic steps
b) Wooden steps
c) Steps attached to the side door - but we discovered that they didn't function as well as hoped, when we tested them at Corowa earlier this year.
d) The new set-up:

https://i.imgur.com/xlPdMQL.jpg

Next - these have been added for the passenger and driver:

https://i.imgur.com/zEACcIL.jpg

And lastly - a common modification to most 101's - I now have some more foot room for my size 14 feet... [thumbsupbig]

I dual wheel carrier is also underway....

So the side steps for the passenger and driver have now been powder coated and installed.

I am very happy with them. Note - the steps should be very sturdy as they are braced on the chassis (second picture):

It looks very low geared to me, so the drill might be the answer

For the amount of times it may get used, would you really need a drill though? It’s a 30:1 winch with a single snatch block so 60:1. Of it took a minute or so to lower or raise it, once a year or so, that’s not a big deal IMO and not worth carrying a powered tool to use it. If it was a stabiliser, etc that was used every time you pulled up, that would be different.

Hi All,

One more minor update on the 101... The wiring for dual battery set-up has always been a dogs breakfast. As I rarely even go into that compartment, I've been naughty and just ignored it..

There is now a slide out drawer which will make it far easier to do maintenance on the battery, charge them (if need be). A new fuse box has also been installed (previously there wasn't one):

https://i.imgur.com/0CzHewK.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/FZc1HGd.jpg

Also - replaced the faulty rear light with a new LED one:

That's it for this update - hopefully the next time that you see a post on the 101, I'm out and about using it!!!

Hi All,

After I got back from my South Australian Outback trip, there were a few minor things that needed sorting...

The drivers side of the windscreen had a hole in it (the rock came all the way through). I decided to replace both sides - WOW what a difference:

https://i.imgur.com/2sxKOBO.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/Sz8SxmM.jpg

The windscreen washer bottle was brittle and started leaking on the trip.. NOS one arrived from England and was fitted today:

https://i.imgur.com/WqiAw2y.jpg

My 101 has Rocky Mountain door tops, and we lost one of the window latches on the trip... I managed to purchase one from Rocky Mountain - all the way from Canada:

https://i.imgur.com/zOw1mVe.jpg

The 101 was also given a full service (air filter, oil filter, oil, prop shafts greased, etc) and it ready for Winter Wombat... Not that I think WW will happen this year.

Cheers,
GG.
