Tacho not working

My tacho (97 Disco) has stopped working.
I think that it has to do with the dunking the underside of the car got when i was launching my boat on the weekend. Can anyone tell me if this is common and what the likely fix is?

PS Prior to it failing (and going in the drink) the needle was jumping around all over the place

unless i am mistaken the tacho is driven by a signal from the alternator.

check that the connections at the back of the alternator

the fact that it was jumping really sounds like a connection IMHO.

Pleased to report that the Tacho is now working. Thanks for the advice, it was the connector on the back of the alternator. Cheers Nick
