Guys,
I've been looking everywhere for the older Hema Cape York Bush Tucker Man Map as I plan on going to the tip within a year or so. It is currently out of print and for the life of me don't know why Hema won't do a reprint. I've browsed through it in the past in shops with the intention to buy closer to the time (shoulda bought it then) but based on this I can't help but feel I've missed the bus...
I've even had my money refunded where I've bought it online - all vendors say they can't get it anymore and Hema won't supply any more. Now I am a bit of a Les Hiddens fan and quite like his work and was quite interested in the sites on this particular map....
Can anyone help me to source one or want to sell their old one? (Market price - about 12 or so bucks so any opportunists out there; I'm not paying much more) If anyone can be so kind as to help us get hold of one I'd be much obliged...
Cheers
Chris :)

How much different are the new maps to Les's old map?
Is it possible that they produce a new map, with the "old information" on it?

There's one up on the wall at Moreton Telegraph Station, why take a copy up when there's one already there? :p
A took a good look at it while I was there, it's basically the HEMA map with a few notes like "good fishing here" or "WW2 bomber crash site" etc. scrawled on. No extra tracks or anything. If you have a decent camera, just take a picture of it and use in conjunction with a standard HEMA map.

I wouldn't mind one of these either.
It could be handy for parts if I'm ever up that way in a P38 Range Rover:

Try Bush Tucker Man (http://bushtuckerman.com.au/) , a hard man to get hold of, but you may be able to message him, & get hold of a copy off him, Bob

Chris, if you come across this map, can I ask you to grab or copy a version for me please. I will start searching too now I know it exists.
I have been waxing and waning on the Cape for a couple years now. I loose interest when I discover Parks have closed a few good things to do up there. Private land is being closed or difficult to access too. And the shear volume of visitors is surprising, though it does seem the main track as well.
But now I have a boat, in parts Parks can get stuffed. I can now go see what has a accesses road too, that parks most likely use, is not NP but managed by NP's, and belongs to us all.
This map may be nothing more than a reflection of what was once possible. But it's always nice to see what that was.

Hello All,
It is not much help because the site says that the map is out of print. However, they do supply a front page picture and product codes to assist people to narrow the search a bit.

Yes, the map did have some interesting pointers in terms of attention to detail - a balloon pointing here where there's an old wreck or another point of interest there.
Yeah - would be nice to get the whole map; sounds like I'm not the only one after it. I'm not amused that Hema would pull the pin on it. If anyone has one and willing to part with it - kindly email us...
chris.tsang@westnet.com.au
Failing that - perhaps that photo of the one mentioned on the wall might suffice (or a good PDF attachment of it....)
Thanks anyway guys
Cheers

Hey Bob,
I'd agree he'd be a hard man to get hold off but if you do get his attention, let him know a fellow Landy driver is after that Cape York Map. May be worth an oil painting I did of the ol' dude...
Cheers

I reckon we get one and make a digital copy of it. If it's out of print by Hema than that shouldn't upset anyone would it.

Hi there. I have both the standard Hema map and the Bush Tucker Man map and they are identical except for a few interesting notes here and there. From a travelling or navigating point of view one is no better than the other. Most of the things on the Bush Tucker map are common knowledge things or places put there to make it easier to find.
I live in north Qld and there were still a few copies of the Bush Tucker version for sale locally. I will see if I can track a few down and report back on my success if anyone is interested.
Cheers, Rick.

I thought there was a version that had pics/details of Bush tucker on the back?

Yes, that's the one. But do you REALLY wan't to eat bush tucker when you have a fridge or esky full of perfectly good food. What they say about bush tucker is true "It tastes like s---, but you can eat it". Bush tucker for us white fellas is about eating to survive and if you know where and how to find it you would only be eating it because you had absolutely nothing else. I have sampled quite a variety of bush tucker up here and find almost all of it very hard to stomach. I'm not talking about wildlife, I'm talking about seeds, plants,, flowers, insects, grubs, leaves and grasses, berries, tubers and quite a bit more. Bush Tucker is great to keep you alive in an emergency but most of us travel in groups these days and use high tech communication equipment as well as GPS locators etc. Les Hiddins probably knows more about bush tucker than most of or indigenous people. I work with a very large number of aboriginal people and most wouldn't be capable of surviving on their own in the bush today.

Thats the version I have seen too. Pictures according to the area the tucker is found in.
Different to the Hema one.

Hi FenianEel,
Thanks - only interested in the BushTuckerMan version - the normal Hema version one are a dime a dozen everywhere=N.A. If you could PM me email - chris.tsang@westnet.com.au or give us a buzz 0407590039 I'd be happy to oblige in buying the Les Hiddens one off you; (hope I haven't broken any rule here.)
Weeds - I take the Sgt Schultz approach about what you just said - I'm not that desperate for the map but it will be only Market Price (+ delivery if required.)
Franrick, I agree a lot of Bush Tucker food tastes like ****e but keep in mind Barra is still considered "bush tucker". There are some other bush tucker that are palletable but I just can't name them off the top of ma head at to moment (could identify it if I saw it though.) I live in the Far North; Cairns and have scoured most shops - they all seem to only have the normal HEMA map - not interested. If you could let us know which particular shop has the BushTucker version I'd be much obliged - (whomever is easier to buy off.)
Someone in this chat previously mentioned something about how they've closed off access on some properties getting up the Cape and put restrictions/limitations - hence the reason HEMA have stopped printing this version. Wouldn't surprise me but I can say the punt (ferry crossing) went up too freakin' much (88bucks to $169 b'cos every man & his dog is going there. Best time to go is at END of school holidays apparently. If you go at the beginning - every cobber is running their genny sets onsite - it's too bloody noisy and full of fumes and bods at the campsites. Anyway I've waffled on too much.)
FenianEel or Franrick, if you could contact us - more than happy to buy off you - (whoever comes first.)
Cheers
Chris

Me neither BUT if its not currently available for sale (commercially or via Les website etc) then you'd probably get away with it.
Might be a nice inclusion in the AULRO "files" section.....

If a scan is made, would a donation be appropriate rather than a "sale" price.
Mind you, been scrolling through the 1:25 000 topos on memory map and the Ipad. Kinda makes my Hema map look good for starting the fire.

Until the battery goes flat. :D
Always got to have paper, especially as a back up.
I can get this copy over to Weeds.

For those interested in Bush Tucker, Les' field guide is still available in a lot of places.

Ahh yes I know. But I have usb, ciggy lighter, and a water proof hard cover on the pad. What could possibly go wrong lol.
Always leve home with some paper. Nothing quite like getting the big picture out and mulling over a few routes.
Good work on the map. Look forward to what transpires.
