gday everyone

I'm in the final throws of ordering a 2013 defender and just wanted to know of peoples experiences regarding the black sawtooth alloys. In particular if anyone has sustained any damage while playing in the mud or being bogged and going offroad.
Are they more susceptible to getting scratched or chipped ect. due to them having a relatively flat face and no real dish like the boost alloys or dual finish alloys?

cheers

Yes. Nice to look at, pita to keep looking nice.

so better off going with the dual finish alloys? considering they are the same price as a factory option.

took mine out the other weekend in rocks and gravel... dusty and dirty, gave then a wipe with a rag and now they look a million dollars.

I got myself into a big rut on my first outing in my 90 and I scratched the hell out of them on the left side. It cost me $200 per wheel to get them back to looking like new.

Great timing on this thread, I'm undecided on dual alloys vs sawtooth myself :o

Would the outcome have been any different with the dual finish or standard alloys? Does the face sit further out relative to the tyre making them easier to damage?

this is what i'm also wondering aswell. if you get in enough trouble to damage the face of a wheel, is a bit of dish going to make a difference?

I suppose the black sawtooths may be easier to repair, being a black painted finished as opposed to a machined alloy finish

I will admit I was on a pretty steep angle and they were acting like a hand mixer in rocks and gravel. I guess they do stick out a little more, but the biggest drawback is the colour. They do show every scratch. When i get new tyres I was considering putting road rubber on them and keeping them for show and using an old pair of D1 Rims for rough stuff.

I'd save your coin for aftermarket wheels with a better offset.

Odd really isn't it ! are defenders show ponies or workhorses.I must admit i have a shiny new black 90 with sun hatch ,sawtooths and 35% dark tints on all windows, heck i have even washed it twice since i acquired it two months ago. I do like the look of it and I get comments on how good it looks but it is a workhorse, we had the beast on dirt within 8ks of the showroom floor, by the time we got it home 700klms later it had been thru a few creeks (not very deep I admit )and still has pinstripes in the paintwork and dust from the trails but it still looks awesome and it will be used as a daily and a trip machine so i don't worry about the state of the wheels too much…..but it certainly makes me grin when i get in the thing.. cheers one and all..

Yeah that's my plan - maybe dual finish alloys for daily drive, and then different rims / rubber for trips.

Even then the dual finish are only to keep SWMBO happy about the long list of missing "luxuries"...;)

They are nice wheels and love them but I have already damaged mine, cant avoid it. Dual finish will get damaged but will not stand out like ****..!:)
