Hey All,
Just wondering if anyone owns a Bush Ranger? What do you think of it?
If so, how practical are they when NOT Off Road?? (other than not being very secure)
Still gonna get my Defender 90 in Feb (maybe March now.....good festive season, if you know what i mean. ....Damn all that drinking! )
Might just get a 2nd hand one of these later this year? thinking about it anyways (we'll see if some extra $$ comes in later on)
For those of you who dont know what it is....Here's a link to some pics and info etc :
http://www.bushy.lookscool.com/
It is basically a 'custom made' Off road BEAST that is made from a 'donated' Range Rover....I think it's a great/ unqiue looking 4wd! That WILL go anywhere!! (so they say)
Thanking all for the feedback in advance!!

I've read a few articles on them and wouldn't mind one my self so will be watching this post eagerly 8) There's a Overlander mag in the newsagents at the moment I bought last week called Custom 4WD's which has an article on a bushranger style of vehicle in it.

KEV0044,
Thanks, the 'Suzi' appreciates it!! (she's been left out recently!) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
But, then again, i may have the D90 by then....we'll see.....
I just want a bit of fuel economy info? (I would assume it guzzles!)
How secure is it...(you know what it's like in Sydney, if it's not tied down....it's GOOOOOOONNNNNNEEEEEE!! )
Do you still need to donate a RR chasis? or can they supply it?
Do you know of the approx price on them currently?
(thinking I may wait to get one made later on this year)
Not sure yet, but i know it would be the ultimate Off Road Beast!
(actually, that depends on how much my D90 can do when i get it?!?!)
Thanks for the help on this one!!
and YES, YES, YES (so long as the particular weekend chosen is free - got a wedding, engaement party, and some 'mile-stone' birthdays to attend soon) COUNT ME IN!!!!
Thanks again

Worst thing is, these vehicles are as cheap as chips in the UK.
You can often buy these "Dakar" cars for less than AUD5,000 with good motors.

Hi Knight,
I have been in one a couple of times. This one is used for stuff like the Warn winch challenge and is heavily modded. Opinion? Mod the D90, accept that you will have panel damage if you take challenging tracks and you will have a vehicle that's just as capable and far more practical.
The Bushranger is a bit rudimentary and a pain to get into and out of and only has a trayback for cargo. Just not suitable for the city. It's advantages are that it has better approach-departure angles and side clearence due to the body styling. That's about it.
Hope this hasn't been too depressing!

That's it then. I'm not buying one !
(Not that I had any intention of doing so....)

Bush Ranger is also the name for the next model up from the Perentie used by the Australian Army... not that its any relation to this one... but just for reference sake.....

Big Fan of your work guys (thanks to Damo!!)
I have decided on JUST getting my D90 (looking forward to it!! - very very soon)
It just looks like the ultimate on/off road BEAST!
But, i will put it into my 'toys' pile - this is when i win the Lotto and can buy a toy or 2 for me to play with!
again, love your work!
Will keep drooling as i see them (occasionally) pass!
Cheers

They used to be made in Oz by John E Davis Motorworks (i.e., John and Bruce Davis) at Annangrove, NSW. Is Bruce Davis (Davis Performance Landys - still at Annangrove) involved with this production?
I can't see any reference to Annangrove or Davis on the website (except in some of the gallery pics).
Edit: It seems not. From the history page:
The Bush Ranger was originally designed as the Dakar in the UK.
John Davis from Sydney redesigned the Dakar to become the All Australian Bush Ranger.
Also called the Bush Rangie at one stage, the Bush Ranger quickly gained reputation for amazing on-road performance and extraordinary off-road agility with some of Australia’s wealthiest people obtaining one of the 28 vehicles built. One or two went to the USA.
Obtaining the moulds and designs, we now offer this vehicle for sale as a kit to rebody your Range Rover or Discovery
I noticed in one of the main pics, the vehicle has free wheel hubs

They bought the rights off john davis, as far as im aware bruce, nor john davis have anything to do with the production anymore

16 grand gets you the kit. probably a lot more if they do the conversion for you

Mate was quoted 15k yesterday for kit

Once converted, it obviously has to be engineered as a re-bodied range rover.
Does the kit include the engineering approvals?
$15k! Geez, I'm tempted.

Have been off roading with Dakar's in the uk many times
And each time the people in them have come off worse.
Would be better in Aus than Europe as they always got very cold , wet and covered in mud and crap.
Also have not seen them do anything that made me want one.

Are you still chasing Dakar's Dakar Mick? He seems rather attached to it, I'm surprised he hasn't chimed in yet.

The original way the Dakar was sold was in the uk was to replace the RRC Body that had rusted away.
You had a good rolling chassis but the body no longer passed the MOT ( roadworthy ) so instead of scrapping the car you replaced the body with the Dakar body.
And the bodies do rust a lot in the UK so much that RRC classic are very rare now in the uk, and now fetch really stupid money.

I don't think I'd have one in the UK either. This little vid explains why we got involved in them.

Resurrection time again.
Hodgo and I went over to Dave's place this afternoon to look at his mule.
It's based on a D1 300tdi not a rangie.
Not a bad looking vehicle either......it should go very well being about a ton lighter.
Dave suggested it may be registered this week and he hopes to take it to the Ipswich show.
I don't think he will selling built up versions of it , rather as a kit.
Dave will be at GCLOC meeting thurs night.
I might pop in too.
