Hey all,

Can anyone recommend a good source for swivel balls?
I've heard the quality is a bit variable and don't want to end up with junk.

Cheers

I've not had problems with All four X 4 in Kotara (newcastle) All Four x 4 Spares - Home (http://www.allfourx4.com.au) they sell both new and re-chromed.

I think they're all the same aren't they?
I'll be during a Railko conversion, not the cone/pin arrangement.

Yes they do series balls, I've bought new and re-chromed off them.

They are also a good supplier for the correct tie rod ends, shouldered or non-shouldered where some vendors supply only non-shouldered which IMHO is unsafe.

As for cone Vs Railko, it makes no difference, the balls are functionally interchangeable all the way 80" through SIII but not Stage 1.

Have you noticed any difference between new and rechromed?

I've had some really dodgy "new" parts for my series 3, a lot of it has the nasty "cast in a Chinese backyard" look about it.

Has anyone actually noted and recorded the size differences' between the Stage 1 and Series ball housings ?

.The external size is not the difference, its that on the inside they are relieved for clearance of the CV joint. The Stage 1 Railko bushes are also shorter but I am unaware if the seat in the ball is in the same location.

I now have Stage 1 swivels on the front of one of my SIIBs. They bolt directly to the axle housing and the part number for the swivel housing is the same for both Stage 1 and SIIB, so as I said externally the balls are the same.

I guess the quality issue is OEM or B..part/generic.

Later series 1s from 1954 on have the same swivel Series ball housings used on series 2s and 3s, however the 80" from 1948 to 1953 arnt interchangeable with later series vehicles.

... the 80" from 1948 to 1953 arnt interchangeable with later series vehicles.

To clarify this correct statement; the 80" Rovers can be fitted with the later swivels.

I bought new swivels, which promptly started to rust in a dry shed

Ash, have you thought about de-rusting the old ones and filling the pits with an epoxy filler? That is what I did on my S3 and no leaks yet :D

Cheers Charlie

Yeah Charlie I was tempted to go that route, but don't want to be doing this again any time soon.. Lol.

I may get them rechromed etc at some stage, keep them as spares.

I ended up getting some through Gary (CLR), theyre Bearmach brand, which are decent. (I've got them on my series 3)
