View Full Version : Defender sub 5 grand?

things are not going to well for me in the finances department currently and with the workplace very volatile Its looking like I may need to sell my puma 90.
That said I have grown attached to the Defender and the Land Rover community.
What I am potentially looking to do is Sell my 90 to pay out its loan and hopefully if I can have enough left over to spend about 5grand tops on getting myself another defender, while I know it will not be a puma as far as comfort goes it will be a defender none the less.
is it possible to find an old 110ute or something registered for sub 5Grand or am I dreaming?
also, any thoughts on what I should market the 90 for?
Thanks
Leroy

Two things.
Point 1: Even if it were possible you'd likely be buying a lot of problems that would cost $ to fix. I'd suggest you'd need a $15K budget to get into a good Tdi or an early / high kms TD5.
Point 2: Sorry mate we have a no "whats it worth" threads policy, except in the subscriber section. Check car sales though.

A Defender for sub $5k - no hope. Any that are that price will need $10k of work done to them.
However you could get a TDI Disco for that. TBH I don't think D1's are worth a great deal anymore and if you hunt around you can potentially find a D1 in good condition and many accessories for $5k. I know it's not a Defender, but Disco's can still be a lot of fun and a great vehicle. D1 certainly beats no 4wd. :)

And if givem a bit of TLC and regular maintenance it shouldn't depreciate much more, if any. So would be a good stop gap until you are able to get back into a Defender.

I paid 2500 for my defender ute. Spent maybe 8 more on it over 18 months. I could've done some things cheaper and not replaced other parts. It's rough and ready but does the job. But the chassis is mostly plates, the firewall is rusty at the top, gearbox is whiny, and there's play in diffs and transfer. But it's mine and I love it so I don't mind spending the money on it.
I'd be looking for a d1 if I only had 5 to spend.

hmm may need to look at a D1, id rather a rangie classic i was to steer away from a defender though, chances are that would cost more though.
first step is prepping the 90 for sale and see what I can get for it :( going to be a sad day if I go ahead with it.

How about a decent Series 3? Not too comfortable for you to put off getting another Defender :p
EDIT: This one http://www.aulro.com/afvb/swap-trade-items/185103-1973-series-3-lwb.html would give you somewhere to carry a pushy!

Can you stretch to 8 for a Tdi Disco (negotiable of course).... ;)
In any event mate you are welcome to test drive mine even if you don't want to buy it - that way you can find out if a disco is for you !
Judo As far as prices go I don't think you'd get too many GOOD Tdi discos for $5K. V8's - yeah sure.

You certainly don't have to go as high as some people think to get a defender 200/300 tdi ute .... or a tdi disco (there was a registered 2 door 300tdi manual at Pt Macquarie recently for $1500).
There are 200/300tdi utes available under $7k (take a look on gumtree Land rover Defender 110 ute | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Tweed Heads Area - Tweed Heads South | 1030221277 (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/tweed-heads-south/cars-vans-utes/land-rover-defender-110-ute/1030221277)), and 1993 Land Rover Defender Ute | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Bega Valley - Wolumla | 1030152282 (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/wolumla/cars-vans-utes/1993-land-rover-defender-ute/1030152282), even down to $5k, but as others have pointed out, they could be well used and a wise buyer would expect it to need some $s spent on maintenance. But as bluemin pointed out above - it doesn't all have to be spent at once - you can spend it over time.
The major problem may well not be cost but rather whether the one you want will be available at the time that you are ready to buy.

There was a defender 90 for sale in Brisbane for $2300 yesterday.
Need a new clutch. But 2.5 Diesel Turbo
No rust in the chassis
Got so close to buying it but with 5 landies already could not justify it. Was proud of myself that I walked away from it.
Waiting for the person that bought it to appear on here

Even V8 counties in good roadworthy condition seem to go for more than $5k!
As others have said, your best option would be a late D1 Tdi. Even then you will need to budget for some work. Our '97 D1 has needed a new head, alternator and clutch in the last 18 months, plus a few other bits.

I dont mind if I need to spend a little on an old defender over time, to be honest I rarely use a car as it is. generally its for camping.
looks like I need more around 7grand than 5 grand as a starting point and accept that it will be rather rough. . .
first thing is first though sell the 90 and see if I will have anything to put towards something, as I need to remove my debt.

The trouble with purchasing a cheap Landy, is it usually requires a fair bit of expense to get it to a reasonable condition.
My County cost me $4000 the day I bought it. Within 12 months it had totalled something like $9000. But had I known what I do now (and listened to more advice) I could have saved at least $2500 from those first twelve months of expenses.

don't worry trailer plans have now been ditched, this all sort of happened a bit all of a sudden and was un-expected but I don't really have a choice.
the trailer project may be up for sale soon aswell, I have about $550 or so in it so deciding if its worth keeping int he shed to finish when things pick up again or to try and sell as an unfinished project.
Ill wait and see what I can get for my 90 to see if ill be able to get into an old defender that needs some love or weather ill be carless for a while (will still have the motorbike so will be able to get places)

Not really, as ma and pa franchise rental companies want them in good nick and generally don't allow them going off road :D
Mine spec is a different matter.

Decent cheap ones do pop up every now and again. Just keep a regular watch on the various add sites. Decent cheap ones sell very quickly. There was a td5 110 on gumtree late last year for less than $5k, it sold in less than 12 hours. Just because you pay more doesn't mean that you won't have expensive issues to fix. I bought my 300tdi 110 off this site for $5k about 3 years ago - it was a good solid base to start with, have done a few things to it, got a bit more to go. Watch the markets and grab stuff/accessories if required and if the price is right.
There are quite a few nice classic rangies around at the moment eg a one owner LSE up north for $6.5k, a low mileage air suspension vogue in Brisbane for $4k with rwc and registered. There was also a 300tdi converted '88 RRC with RWC, registered and blue plated for $4k.
