I have a 96 300tdi 110 wagon that i am refurbing to be my everyday transport and outback traveller. I have young kids and the wife wasn't keen on the rear bench, so i took the opportunity to grab a set of late model rear defender seats.....the cars look the same, couldn't be that hard! Now looking at photos of cars for sale it looks like the late cars have a smaller and different shaped inner guard in the rear, which I figure allows for these bigger seats to sit back a little further.

Has anyone successfully fitted a set of these to an earlier car? I have quite a bit of experience in panel repair and fabrication, but thought i would check if someone has already done this before i reinvent the wheel.

you would need them to get engineered anyone have an idea how much that would cost, and can you still get the bench style seats in the rear engineered?
Good question you have asked Craig as I am sure many have given it a bit of thought

$440 I was quoted for engineering for a 3rd row pair of fold up seats out of a late model 110 into my 96 110.

Thanks for that. I might have a look at a later Defender because i thought something was different there in the inner guard - started watching and thought great - no cutting - made it look very easy. But while it may get them by for a trip I think it needs some more work.

But for the discussion here I think for engineering it is going to need a bit more than a couple of washers through aluminium i would think. The chassis cross member is right under the front mounts and the original has brackets attached to that. I would think fabricating some new brackets would be the go. The other problem i had is that they mounted it straight through the carpet etc - would have thought it better metal to metal - but then im not an engineer!

Also the seats i have i think must be out of a dual cab ute set up - my rear mounts are different to what they have shown. But i imagine that will work out ok but they wont fold down and retract like those ones. Also doesn't have those springs they refer to and some other brackets because i think they may have fixed them in the utes.

Yes it does sound like you have 130 rear seats. They should also have mounting plates on he rear tops where they bolt to he rear of the cab wall.

If it becomes to much of a task, and you want to move them on please PM me. I'm looking at fitting a second bucket in mine.

they do have those top mounts - will keep that in mind but will keep working on the rest of the car so may take me another month or so whether to pursue seats or not. They will be well travelled by that stage having come from Sydney!
