View Full Version : Charcoal grey alloy rims on a Defender. Anyone painted their Boost Alloys white?

Decided to go back to the bog standard Boost Alloys on my 110, as the Michelin XZY's on Wolf rims are a bit noisy, and I have a brand new set of General Grabbers on alloys sitting in the shed.
Decided to paint them (yes, I know, I have too much time on my hands).
I thought about white alloys, as the Wolf rims where white, like this:

Ended up going with a charcoal grey, as I thought white alloys might be a bit poxy:

Now I'm not so sure! Looks a bit heavy :( Might look better on a lighter (white) defender.
Has anyone got a photo of a dark coloured Defender with white Boost alloys?
Thanks

Thats the colour I'm after for my Silver 90, think your right about looking heavy on yours, wouldn't silver look better, White might be too 'in ya face' :)

Dad painted the alloys on his ute (it's white, but not a Defender) white (actually he painted everything white).
I don't think the charcoal looks too bad actually, and I think white would look fine aswell.

I really like the wheels how you have done them. I was going to paint the sawtooths that colour after I scratched two of them. I have had them redone in black, but if I scratch them again I think I will go silver or grey.

I think that this is so far down my list of priorities and, let's be honest, it's not a bad colour anyway, I'd leave it as is.

If you want to get the same colour, ask at any crash supply shop for Porsche Metallic Agate Grey (Also called ACHATGRAU METALLIC in German). A 1L tin cost me about $50, which is enough to do about 25 rims I reckon! I only used 200mL for 5 rims.
You can leave it satin, but I oversprayed with 2 pack clear.

Yeah - I know. First World Problem ;)
It doesn't take long to do though - probably 2 or 3 hours of work to sand, prime and paint. I didn't even take the tyres off the rims (I just broke the bead on one side and pushed them away from edge).

I think it looks quite good and it's a low-maintenance colour too. A few shades lighter, similar to the bumper colour, would be about perfect, but no way would I bother changing them.
I've got peeling alloys on one of my other cars (factory issue, they all do it) and will need to get them redone at some stage. Did you use paint or powder coat?

Did them in 2-pack base with a 2-pack topcoat.

Tyres off or just masked?
Many years ago I worked for a plant hire outfit in Sydney. One of the painters there would spray paint the entire wheel. Then get out his paint-brush and paint the tyre black again.:D

I broke the bead on the front face only, just so I didn't have to bother with re-balancing the wheel etc. When spraying, I just draped a cloth with a circle cut in it over the tyre. Easy.
BTW - those General Grabbers are a bugger to break the bead on! My Tyre-Pliers wouldn't even look at it. I had to make a lever that was about 2m long to break the bead
