Currently looking at buying an 80 model Rangy. Those who have one with the original 3.5l in it, please tell me what you think of it.

I'm planning on doing a bit of serious offroading so contemplating fitting air-lockers, unless the viscous drive works well enough in the '89 models. And will be raising 2", new rancho 9000 shocks and probably 35's on the wheels. Will the engine be able to handle this sufficiently and also have good power on the road?

Has anyone done anything to the 3.5l to improve performance/power etc.

All opinions will be much appreciated.

The efi engines are good offroad (in low range) plenty of grunt there

My main power upgrade would be a set of extractors and 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with free flow muffler.
Min has the above and I think its go plenty of balls downlow

Viscous coupling started in December 1988.
