What a bargain

Lonely looking '02 Defender Xtreme at a Yota dealership.

23,000km. Red. Bullbar, steering protector, rear storage system (but no cargo barrier), towbar, snorkel, chequerplate bonnet guards, rocksliders, Dunlop muddies except for the spare which is a worn Dunlop AT. Interior is ok but bears marks of accessories removed. Rear diff has oil around it. Underside of vehicle is dirty, very poorly washed. No scratches. Looks like evidence of offroad use for sure, might even have been beach work, not sure.

How much do you think it's worth, and how much do you think they're actually asking?

They would probably be asking $37K, but sounds like I wo0uldn't want to be paying much more than $32K. Off the mark or not?

I agree, Kev. I've seen enough 4WDs that are used offroad to get a feeling about them, and this one didn't feel right. Why the sale, I wondered, after that amount of time?

The price, would you believe, was $47,995.

Yes indeed. That would be more than $1000 more than a *new* one, ie '04, not '02, and 0km. However, obviously a new vehicle has onroad costs and won't have the useful accessories fitted, which cost say $4000. But I think the asking price was far too much, and it doesn't say much for the dealer that the vehicle goes on sale with shined black tyres and dirt in crevices under the body.

The four muddies are very new, not even 22,000km worth of wear. They are 7.5s, not 235/R16 so that implies they were bought as part of a deal aftermarket, and the buyer clearly needed an identical size as as spare, hence the worn AT spare which has probably 60-70,000km.

Anyway, I already decided not to buy it but looking doesn't hurt. My prediction is that it stays around that dealership for quite a while, being a Landie, and overpriced at that.

The other problem they'll have with selling it is the tyres. The 7.5s are narrower than the standard 235s, and in mud terrain. That will drive noise levels even higher, and the narrow tyre and aggressive tread will see a penatly on improve on-road performance in terms of handling.

The vehicle is overpriced at nearly $48k, but $37 is too low. That's Range Rover depreciation of 27% over two years! I think $40-$42,000 would be fairer.

Don't get me wrong, those prices were a stab in the dark because I haven't looked at defender prices for a while. Although you don't often see them for sale down here, people seem to hold on to them for quite a while.

2 years old, mmm, I suppose 40 + would be cloder to the mark, but more than a new vehicle, not I. I'd pick the new vehicle any day, then I don't have a bucketfull of another guys problems.

I agree, too close for comfort. Be interesting to know the reason for sale. Defender depreciation is pretty good, a three-year novate lease gives 45% residual, and the Defender should be above that.

Thats pretty good, and from what I have observed here in Tasmania, it can often be better than that, although the numbers that you have posted are usually pretty close to what we see here.
