With many GPS systems like Igo when you do not know exactly where you want to go in a distant town or city you can use the find address function and select "city centre" and it will take you there - from there you can use other functions such as POIs around destination to find what you want.

However on my on my Garmin Nuvi you cannot seem to do this as you must select an actual address and if you do not complete the address it will not accept the entry. eg I cannot tell it to say take me to Bathurst as I can with Igo.

Now I can just select any address in the town and for small towns this may be OK but for can be problematic for larger cities.

So does anyone know how to simply search for the name of a town or the city centre on the Garmin. I have had a look at the handbook but it only covers entering a full address.

Thanks

Garry

You can enter a POI like post office which is usually the town centre.
Or intersection of the main road and another.

The only way I have found to do this with my Garmin is with the voice control function. If you speak at it, then you can chose city centre.

It is very annoying.

Well thanks for the responses but I am feeling like a bit of a goose :(.

Yesterday I was driving and thought I would try the post office thing that was mentioned Phillip - doesn't work as such because you need to enter an address first and then search for the POI.

However on the search page it has things like address, home, favourites, history etc but then for the first time I noticed a small arrow pointing down on the right side of the page :(. Hitting that brings up a new page of possible searches including "City Centre" :censored:. Hmm had this GPS for nearly 6 months and not noticed this and can not find it in the instructions - maybe because it is so obvious.

So feelin a bit silly but appreciate the responses. ;)

Thanks

Garry

Garry, when in a strange town, we always use #1 Station St,, however this has bought us unstuck at times too . We have used various other "common" street names to get us near to where we want to be.

In the main search function (menu page), you should be able to access "places of interest", or it may say points,,,
So this should then bring up various things like service stations, hospitals, police stations and the like.
However, this will really only work when your "in" the specific town you want as such. But it will also use an arrow to point a direction, which may if you know which direction your headed to start with, keep you on the straight and narrow.

Also, if your unit takes an SD card, you can from someone like Johnny Appleseed, buy better maps for it.

Glad you found it, when the family and I were tripping overseas the car we had in Germany had this feature and when I got to Ireland the maps I bought for the Garmin came into play.
It to took us a while to find the same feature, but once we had it I have used it time and time again.
